84 F150 Starter Issues

My 84 f150 5.8 351 auto 2wd is a recent purchase. Great running truck with only 71,000 original miles. My problem is it has gone through now 3 starters in a month. Also has a brand new flywheel on it. I read on some other posts that you need the 10-tooth starter to solve this problem? It has always made weird noises and not started easily. I have it in a shop right now who fixed it 3 weeks ago and are warrantying their work but are trying to figure out the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I believe there is a starter setup for a manual tranny and one for a auto tranny. Beyond that, I don't know.
