Starting Issues
I have a 351W 5.8L that is have starting problems. The problem is that the starter is not engaging the flywheel. First I got a new starter and it still did not work. I got a shim and it worked great for about a month and the same problem happened again. I then tinkered with the shim and it worked great for another 2 weeks. Now it seems I have to mess with the shim almost everyday just for the truck to start. I need a fix that will fix the problem for good. Hope someone out there can help.
1) Are you using the correct starter? They're different, depending on auto or manual trans.
2) Faulty or defective starter; shims should not be needed on any Ford engines.
This is assuming a stock truck, all bets are off if the flywheel has been changed.
So I got a new starter, and I got the correct auto transmission starter. I installed it and the same problem occurs. The starter spins but does not engage the flywheel. I put the shim in and then the truck starts fine. From past experiances I know this is not a permanent fix. Any other suggestions for this problem?
2 ideas I thought of:
1.) Grind down the metal around the starter housing on the Tranny
2.) Buy a new Tranny
this forum and see what's been said in the past, I know this has come up before but
don't recall anything more than what I've already said....
Only other thing I can think of that would cause the mesh depth to change like that, would be thrust bearing inside the engine allowing the crank to walk to/fro.
Unless the starter drive stop ring is continually popping off, letting the starter drive travel too far, missing the flywheel......
