Got nutz?

1970 xlt 2wd had to pull the carrier bearing and broke the tabs that retain the nut with nubs on it which keeps it from backing off. cant find them online. any leads would be appreciated. if not suggestions; locktight, longer bolt/double nut or home made piece to keep them from backing off - is it necessary?

People tend to call this two piece driveshaft bearing by the wrong name.

A carrier bearing is another name for a differential bearing, located inside rear axle.

Where are these tabs located that retain the nuts...you're referring to? No see um.

No pic in 1964/72 catalog, so I'm using the 1973/79 pic. The center support bearing and related parts are the same.

hope these pics post if not i have a project album they are in i learning to navigate this system and i will be on alot now because im puttig her back together dustin her off and painting her undercarriage. numbers d - i didnt find it online or fordification but i see the support is similar in 73-79 lower pic and the nut appears to be on the bottom with out any retention clip. my nut was on top spun out of clip on one side and those nips only allow half fit with tool so i had to go mcguyver on it to break it loose. thanks for the heads up on the center support. i see different terminology online sometimes like with a transmission tailshaft seal/ rear seal and something else i already forgot. so can i find the set up - do i have to use it and if not - new nuts and bolts; nuts up or down 73-79 is down

Hey Todd.

Those clips were wide enough to slip over the frame mount and the bearing mount to hold them together as you slip the bolts in. I did this many a million times with my '70 years ago.

Bill, the picture you posted only shows nuts/bolts holding the support up. But that is '73 up, and Todd has a '70. That is likely the reason it doesn't look right.

You could just go to Pavey's and get the generic version that still stay on the frame bracket and then have to hold the carrier bearing up as you start the bolt.

Too bad Adelmans doesn't have these bumps around anymore as you could probably get a few used ones. OR.............you could make some?? Bend some sheetmetal then tack weld a nut to it? Or bring the broken one over and I'll see if I can Macgyver it up and make it work again. Or is the nut stripped?

hey, how ya doin? thanks for reply, i was hoping i could find the clip and nut is special too no napa/lmc... gonna try ziggies nut house the 73 support is similar so im wondering if it is necessary for vibration and all...and 73 tells me no? i did find a similar clip nut setup for my spare tire bolt. if i could get the parts i would like to do it the same. also it was nut up and 73 is down and it would have been easier down-clearance was there. i used a wedge to help me break it loose. this all came about getting to my c6 tailshaft oil seal; im going to use can to tap it in. question, there was a tiny tiny diameter the same size as the seal that came out with the seal but no spring with the new one or mention in the manual so i assume it was a part of the old seal and not the new. i believe at best it was support for the rubber. take a look at my ps post if you will and comment

That kind of looks like a "U" nut.... you might try checking with auveco, and looking through their 'Flat, "J", "U" & Extruded "U" Nuts'

Don't know who they use as distributors Maybe Dorman?

Auveco seems to supply mainly body shops.
