For what it's worth, I bought a 351M longblock through Autozone in January. The manufacturer was Recon. I checked it all out, and finished up the engine. I've only got about 3,000 miles on it, but it's been alright
Ok I'm the guy that posted the question. I'm an avid online gamer and don't get to check my mail much. Anyway, I'm planning to go to Autozone to purchase my engine. Ok they have answered all the relative questions, and provided me with much xtra info. There engines are from recon automotive. They sound good but was wondering if anyone has had an autozone bought engine. And yes I really appreciate all the input I have and will get.Thanx millions. O yes and I'm on a limited budget so there ya go.
Also what are the requirements for installing and breaking in the engine that wont void the warranty in case there is a problem later?
Not trying to insult you or anything but can you identify the engine before you take it home from the store? I'll give you a little advice. If this engine is supposed to be a 400, it is possible to get a 351M by mistake from someone including a parts store because these engines are identical on the outside. Better look it over good in that case. 351W and a 302 are pretty close also. It is very easy to spot the differences in these to most seasoned Ford people, but mistakes still happen. Don't feel pressured to take possession of a rebuilt engine. Most people will just load it up, take it home, install and never check the details I mentioned.
If your lucky you will be able to look into the sparkplug holes and maybe see the overbore size stamped into the top of the pistons. This will be nice to know since you may atually rebuild it yourself someday and you will know how much life you may have left in this engine for future rebuilds.
As I posted originally, it is the original 351M. I would like to rebuild it myself but time constraints and funds are a bit limited at this time. But as a general, I will be putting all new external components on the remanufactured engine.Nothing frome the existing engine will remain. I.ve got an Edelbrock 400 intake and Holley street Avenger carb already. Gonna get new Alt, Water Pump, Dist, PS Pump. I'd like to put duel exhaust on it but am having a hard time finding headers to fit a 351M.
Could have been my mistake.....I know Advance auto sells the same engine, from Recon, but it has a longer warranty and cost several hundred more. I figured if things were going to go wrong, they'd happen sooner rather than later. Just as an aside, I know Autozone gives you the option of smog or anti-smog heads. For some reason the anti-smog engine is actually cheaper. It has tubes in the head for the air pump. I bought the cheaper engine, but did not use the AIR system...everything seems to work fine.
Hmmm... Interesting advance was $200 cheaper, but autozone says they will match the advance price. With no smog tubes the engine is $1209.99.These prices may be by location too.
I looked at autozone and they said it would be $829.00 both the 351 and 400 were the same price. If you don't have an engine stand or hoist you can buy or rent either. By the way, you want the smog tubes, they will improve you gas mileage and power.
Originally posted by mattsbox99 I hear Jasper engines are pretty good but I have no experience with them. They are available at NAPA.
I called my local NAPA to check on a Jasper reman. and they said they had no availability for Jasper. Maybe it's a regional thing? Or perhaps some NAPA owners source from different places? This thread got me thinking about a crate motor since my 460 which just recieved a Duplicolor spray can rebuild is making some pretty bad noises. I never shoulda put exhaust on. Before the exhaust went on everything sounded fine!
