How to remove spark plug wire bolt?

Went to change the plugs on an 02 f350, the bolt holding the plug wire boot on doesnt seem to fit any standard size socket. 7 is too big, 6 is too small. 1/4 is too small, 9/32 is too big.

???

thanks for the help

I am not positive that it is the same on all year models and all engines, but on a 2000 6.8 v10, the bolt head is 7mm.

A 6 point socket works best for me.

I had a similar issue yesterday. I believe 6 or 7mm fit but it was tight on several due to rust buildup. I would gently tap it on with a hammer and clean them up before you reinstall

PB blast....soak those babies and allow it to de-oxide some of the Iron Oxide on the bolt.

I thought they were 8mm? Anyway, they are a standard metric size.

For the life of me i cant get 6mm on them, and 7 has a lot of wiggle room. enough i know its gonna strip it. i just know it.

I don't have one so I can't say, but if a 6mm is too small and 7mm is too big try a 1/4" 6 point, it is equal to 6.35 mm. it may work.

Change plugs on an aluminum head engine with the cold. This reduces any risk of any slightly seized aluminum (to plug threads) being removed with the plug.

The factory size is 7mm, so unless someone has put some funky aftermarket bolts that's what you have. Make sure to use a 6-point socket. These bolts don't have much torque at all, you shouldn't strip them.
