I recently bought a 1980 f 150 with the 300 single barrel carb and its a manual it only wants too run when cold and it runs great cold but as soon as it warms up it'll only idle if I give it any gas it sounds like its only sucking air and it will die if gas is held however if you let off it'll go back too an idle if I turn it off for about 15 minutes it'll run right for about the same any help would be very appreciated I only Payed 250 for the truck and its only the second vehicle ive owned so I will be asking for help quite a bit

What's the vehicle's story? Was this a truck that sat a long time before you got it, or was it driven regularly? Has it been like this since you got it, or is this something relatively new? And have you done any maintenance to it yet?
Trucks this old can have a lot of issues. They commonly get a lot of crud in the gas tank by this time, so if you haven't replaced the fuel filter yet that would be a good place to start - I also have a 1980, and the tank was pretty hideous when I first got it. Check the plugs, plug wires, et cetera.
Then you'll want to make sure your choke is operating properly, and it's probably not a bad time to get a kit and rebuild the carburetor and make sure everything is in spec. Fortunately, these Carter carbs are very easy to work on, if you follow the directions in the kit you won't have any issues. If it's still not running at that point, you can do more detailed troubleshooting knowing that the basics have been taken care of.
I got it from an old man who quit driving it in 08 but he'd go out and start it atleast once a week and let it idle for about 30 minutes and ive only had it for a couple of weeks and haven't got around too doing any maintenance and I havent got around too checking the tank yet and the choke works like it should
Cold engines like rich mixtures, so maybe the air filter is filthy?
The 300 six cylinder is a great engine, but hates vacuum leaks. Check all rubber vacuum hoses and vacuum ports [carburetor and intake manifold] for open ports.
Gently grab the air cleaner and see if you can rock it from side to side. If so, check the two bolts which hold the carburetor to the EGR adapter. The nuts vibrate loose and this causes a vacuum leak. Sometimes, the 4(?) small screws which hold the bottom of the carburetor to the top half, loosen. The carburetor has to be removed and turned upside down to tighten these.
Could the gas tank vent be clogged? If so, a vacuum will be pulled when the engine runs and fuel will not flow well. Either loosening the gas cap or sitting for awhile can temporarily help with this.
Okay so I had some time today too look at my truck and I was curious and took off my air filter and put my hand over the carb and gave it gas as long as I held my hand there I could rev it with just the tiniest bit of air it could suck through my fingers but as soon as I'd move my hand it'd choke it self out so I think its a vacuum leak and I was wondering if there's any really common vacuum leaks that I should check or a easy way of checking for it that's really cheap
Check all rubber and plastic vacuum lines. Look at the brake power booster and PCV valve grommet. With the engine running, spray carburetor cleaner around the base of the carburetor as well as the intake manifold/engine interface. If the idle speed changes, you have discovered a leak. Listen for a whistling noise.
One thing that I found on this engine is that the carb bolts loosen up. This causes a major vacuum leak. Tighten them up while searching for leaks. Be lucky that this isnt a smog motor.
