460 performance parts

I believe that it is an 80s block, ill have to check to be sure. It has cast heads, but im not sure what kind yet. Currently has a set of long tube headers and a 1406 edlebrock carb. I want to increase the torque out of this thing as it is going into my mud truck. What all can be done to these old motors? I plan on a low rise intake and a set of upright headers, but everything else, im not sure on. I heard, if I remember correctly, that using a FI timing chain set straight up will help a lot. Is this true? I believe it has an aftermarket cam in it, but not sure which. With that said, what cam would be a good choice for a low rpm torque boost? Anything I can do to the heads beside the usual gasket matching, or should I shoot for a newer set?

Hey there, I might be able to help out a little bit. So if the big block you have is an 80's block, do you know if it still has the original heads on it? If it still does, the post smog heads after 72, are garbage from the factory. Porting and cleaning up the heads especially on the exhaust side will help tremendously. Also the compression ratio is realistically around 7:8.1, So adding some compression would help, you can either do pistons or deck the block.
Then you mentioned the timing chain, but you said a FI chain. I think you might be mistaken for a pre smog set. You would want a 68-71 timing set, and set it straight up. Since the post smog 460's were 4 deg retarded from the factory. Then for your cam I would call Scott at reincarnation, he can build you cam for your specific application, and it costs almost the same as a off the shelf cam. You can always use these fourms, there is so much info there its not even funny. I hope some of this helps.

If you have the money you could stroke it to 532 ci.

SCAT Stroker Kit 1-94970 1-94970-1 1-94970BE Ford 460 BBF 9000 Cast Crank H Beam Rods 532ci

or 545 ci

Increasing the stroke increases torque. Just like a cheater bar does on a rachet or breaker bar.

When I bought it I was told it was stroked to a 521. I do not know much about 460s, but Im a pretty knowledgeable person when it comes to Ford small blocks... I just think if someone would have stroked it, they would have put aftermarket heads and intake on it... is there any way to tell without tearing it apart?

I did take it to pull at the truck pulls last year and let me tell you... I was not impressed. I think the clutch was slipping, or I didn't have the timing right or it does not have a good cfm carb. Its a 1406 edlebrock which I think is only 500-650 cfm if I recall. It just didn't seem like a big block, let alone a stroked one.

There wouldnt be any to tell without tearing it apart, since it gets the extra displacment from the crank. Also you wouldnt have to put aftermarket heads on either to make good power. The 1406 is small for a 521, I would think atleast a 750 cfm carb, but to each their own.
