Post Driveshaft Bearing replacement

I believe the driveshaft bearing in my 93F150 5.0L E4OD is going out. I can hear a whinning/squeeling noise when I take off. The noise gets louder/faster as speed increases and under heavy load. It definitely appears to be comming from the rear of the truck and does not occur all the time. I have shook the driveshaft and noticed some play and a knock from the bearing within the support. Does that sound like it could be the culprit to you guys? Also if in fact that is the case is it an easy "driveway" job to replace the bearing itself or should I go ahead and replace the bearing and support together?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Driveshaft Bearing replacement

Mike , You mean the U joint , Correct ? Replacing the U joint is a simple repair , Mark the driveshaft & place a corresponding line on the pinion yoke , remove the U bolts , push the driveshaft fwd & lower it , remove it from the trans or transfer case if its 4WD . What I do to remove the U joint from the driveshaft is first remove the locking clips with a pair of needle nose pliers , Now get a socket that is slightly smaller than the cups of the U joint & another socket that is larger than the cups . Place the smaller socket on one cup in a vise & the larger socket on the opposite cup , Use the vise to press the cup out of the driveshaft , Repeat for the other set of cups . Installation requires you remove at least one cup so be careful you dont disturb the needles bearings . Use the vise to press them back in , Some light taps with a hammer may be nessecary to get the cups set properly so the new locking clips fit back in their grooves . Install the driveshaft back so the alignment marks match & tighten the U joint nuts .

Driveshaft Bearing replacement

I had the same symptoms from my pickup and suspected the center support bearing, which had some play in it (the rubber mount), but it turned out to be u-joints.

That is correct, MustangGT221, I am talking about the center support bearing. Thanks to each for your input. I guess I will just try the u-joints first as they are a bit cheaper and see if that takes care of it.

Thanks again,
Mike

Post Driveshaft Bearing replacement

Replaced the u-joints this past weekend. I would have replaced the center support bearing while I was there, but couldn't get the splined section of the front to rear driveshaft apart. Anyway it took me about 3 1/2 hours to do alone and resolved the chirping/squelling noise on acceleratin and the banging noise while releasing and re-applying pressure to the accelerator. Thanks to everyone who replied to my original post, you guys and this site are amazing.
