engine will not warm up

its a 2001 f250 with a 5,4. i just recently put a new shot block in it, the short block is a svt short block for an 01 lightning. every thing off old motor went on new svt block just fine, and it drop in just fine. only it will not warm up i let it run for 45 min the other day and on the gauge it would not come past the c. and i do beleive the gauge to be accurate because the heat in the cab sucks and the top rad hose is just wam, not as hot as it should be. ive allerady put 2 new thermostats in it so i dont believe that to be the issue either. any ideas?

Did you purge the air out of the cooling system when you installed the new engine?

no. how would i do that. i allways thougt air bubbles would make it over heat due to lack of flow, not keep it cool

I would check the thermostat and test it, also you would need to burp the coolant system and see if you have air.Welcome to the FTE.

It does sound as though the thermostat may be stuck open. I've had that happen to me a couple of times.

And you do realize that the Lightning short block has lower compression pistons in it since it was originally for a supercharger, right?

Power will be down due to that.

As to the cooling, test the stat in a pan of water on the stove, hang it by a piece of wire so it doesn't touch the bottom of the pan and watch it as the water heats up to see when it opens.

If the temp sensor is in fluid it might be accurate. If it is not then it wont read accurately.... btw you made my day with the I know my temp gauge is accurate becasue it is just above the c...

Sometimes, and air pocket will develop behind the closed thermostat. This will not allow the heated coolant to come in contact with the thermostat, so the thermostat never gets a chance to open.

There are a few methods to allow the air to escape. One is to drill a hole in the thermostat body. A small hole in the body allows the air to pass and doesn't pass enough water to interfere with the function of the thermostat. Another method is to wedge an aspirin pill into the thermostat when you install it. (This is real old school stuff here). The aspirin holds the thermostat open so air will pass, but will dissolve after a few minutes and allow normal thermostat function.

Google each method for specific instructions. Good luck.

On Gas motors I would always leave the radiator cap off upon first startup till it got warmed.

Either defective thermostat, or 'stuck open' thermostat.

One other possibility........ You DID INSTALL a thermostat, didn't you??????
(Believe me, stranger things have happened!)

yea i figured there would be a little compression differance but i got a good deal on the short block so i figured i could live with the little bit of power loss. i just dont think testing the t stat will get me any where, what are the odds of me gettin 2 bad one in a row.
