Ok so what could blow out underneath my truck that sprays a foul smelling liquid all over the place now I can't go any where. Truck starts and runs fine but won't go forward or backward. I was driving down the road hauling a trailer, started heading up a hill so I took it out of overdrive and that's when it began. I made it up the hill fine but when I got to the top I couldn't put it back in overdrive I started loosing power and speed my rpms were at about 3,000 and it was smoking like crazy. I pulled over put it in park and turned it off, got out and looked underneath to find liquid everywhere even on the side of my truck and all over the trailer. I'm totally lost I didn't think transmissions normally go out like that but what else could it be? Any ideas would help since I'm at a standstill right now.
Truck is a 93 IDI non turbo 7.3 automatic 4x4 with 171k
Since you said you took it out of overdrive, then I'm going to assume you have a E4OD tranny. Those are renowned for their poor reliability. maybe you encountered your first burned out tranny. Can you manually shift the vehicle on the tree?
It is the E4OD I can't tell if the color is red it does smell awful but it not coming from the rear, the drivers side of my engine compartment is covered with it to. Like the coolant resivoir, windshield washer container break fluid are all covered with it but nothing on the other side of the engine is.
My guess is its burnt ATF. That stuff is brown/black when roasted and even a tiny smear of it is enough to make you wanna puke. There are transmission oil cooler lines that may have failed explaining the mayhem under the hood. Did you check your transmission dipstick to see if its full, or has the odor?
it sounds like one of the lines between the trans and the trans cooler blew out, and you emptied the trans of fluid.
hopefully you will be able to fix the leak, fill it, and be good to go.
but you may be looking at a trans rebuild.
there is a tranny oil line that exits and go up to the radiator and or a cooler mounted in front of radiator and back to tranny, or if the tranny was over full it can foam the oil in the tranny and blow out the vent and get on the hot exhast and stink, check fluid level when running in park.
Ok so I just drove the truck home. Tranny was out of fluid refiled it and the radiator cuz it was low to and drove it. It will not go into overdrive and the OD light blinks but...nothing sprayed anywhere so I'm gonna do a tranny filter/fluid change and see what happens. Thanks for the help guys!
If the OD light is blinking, the tranny is in limp mode. Don't drive it until you get that fixed. There's quite a bit of info on here about what the different codes are. Hopefully the fluid/filter change is all it will need.
this sounds bad.....very bad.keep us posted.did you get the level full? will it go into reverse without stalling out? if so,and it still doesn't going into od,it doesn't sound good.
a trans temp gauge would have shown the high fluid temps before she burnt up and spewed all over.likely could have saved the trans if you shut her down once you saw her reaching 250F with no sign of going down.then you could have inspected plugged up cooler/lines and or failed pump or something.
could have just been neglected too.how many miles was on the fluid in there? she might have just been all broken down and finally just called uncle.ideally the fluid gets flushed every 30k ish miles depending on how it's used/how warm the fluid gets regularly.
I just bought the truck less than a week ago i dont know how old the tranny fluid is and i dont have a trans temp guage yet i want to get one but had to do a couple other things to the truck first. As for the OD light blinking i cant find a answer on how or what to check. The onely part i know of that is related is the speed senser on the back pumkin which isnt bad. At least its not judging by my spedomitor, i dont want to drive with it blinking tomarrow im off work so im gonna change the tranny fluid what else can i do?
it plugs in,under the hood.up by the drivers side hood hinge.the book that comes with it will tell ya how to use it.test KOEO and hold WOT during scan.
Alright so I finally got time off work to fix my truck. I changed the tranny fluid and filter, went into town and borrowed a code reader which told me my speed sensor was bad. I replaced it and the od light is not blinking anymore! and I have overdrive again (which I think is due to the fluid change) my speedometer fluctuates a lot now which it didn't do before but that's minor compared to the od light blinking so I'm satisfied. Thanks for all your help guys hopefully I'll get some more miles out a this tranny.
