Take your old one to a local electrical shop and have it built to a higher spec. I just dropped mine off Friday for the same reason, made in China sticker right on the case.
What Jason said ^. Find a good local rebuilder and do business with him. You will never regret it. When you buy junk from Autozone, etc etc with a lifetime warranty, you are going to need a lifetime warranty. Does your time to change out alternators have value? If so, use a rebuilder.

I have 2 ford factory original alternators 1 had 140,000 miles on it the other has 150,000 miles. took one of them to the local rebuild shop to get repaired, when it was done I had my daughter pick it up as she was close by their shop, she gets back to my shop and the box it is in says "made in China" think that they just threw it in that box for something to put it in! a couple days later I actually open the box and there is a new made in china alternator in it! I blow up and call them and they tell me my "old" alternator isn't rebuildable! I proceed to tell them if I am going to pay $180.00 for junk made in China I will just go to autozone and save $50.00 and get a lifetime warranty and that I would be there in 45 minutes to get my old alternator and a refund.
when I got home my old alternator had not even been dis assembled.
so now I am running a pos from autozone that I get to warranty about 2 times a year.
so I guess my point is that not everyone has a "reputable builder" close by.
this shop has been around for 30 years that I know of.
Mine is still running strong from that thread. Unfortunately, it seems many of the local rebuilders are now getting junk parts made in China and only replacing some of the guts, not all of them, so their rebuilds seem to be on par with the junk rebuilds from the parts stores.
At least with new Chinese junk, it's all new instead of partly new. I believe there are still some places around that use quality parts and do a quality job, and there are some online places that offer higher quality stuff. Sometimes there's just not time to wait.
I'm in no way defending Chinese crap. It's very hard to live life today without buying some of it.
25 years ago I took a starter to a local shop , a few years later I took him an alternator . One is still going , I sold the truck with the alternator rebuild .Same shop today ... I would not trust to fix anything ! I see issues with rebuilds all the time . I would go with the parts house reman unit myself .
What they left out maybe, it isn't rebuildable at a price people are willing to pay. Those "cheap" alternators coming from overseas don't just put the huge factories down, they put all the little guy parts jobbers out too.
Have to admit, took all those old school shops for granted, but those boys are getting up there in age. I'm figuring when they hang it up, forget it. Seen any TV repair shops lately? Didn't think so. Nobody around to take their place.
My good, local shop wanted $120 to rebuild my OEM Ford unit and sandbagged me a week on even taking it apart. That irritated me a bit.
I reluctantly ordered a so-called 'OEM alternator' (which I had imagined might be Motorcraft) alternator for $100 from RockAuto. It was a brand new (not reman) Chinese alternator. It has, however, worked perfectly for a few years. I kept my old Ford alternator (no cores with Rock Auto), so I might one day have it rebuilt as needed.
I found/called a place called Mr Alternator.
The guy that answered the phone said they rebuild these for about $125 with a one year warranty.
I have never used them but am considering them.
My local shop called me today and gave me a price of $180 to bump up to 180 amp. I asked if they were rebuilding mine and they said no, it would be a brand new unit. I asked them what was the output on the one I gave them and he said he thought it was 110 amp unit. I said go ahead and get the $180 unit. Then I will pull the Chinese one for a spare. I paid $160 for that one.
