I'm almost done with my 70 f250 and I came across this truck: http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/cto/4406850954.html. The motor is done but the rest of the truck looks good, it's a auto, this is my first experience with this era. What would be a good buy price on this thing? Thanks for the help guys
Let me get this straight. This guy posts two very hazy photos of a truck in primer with lots of unknowns, admits that the engine is toast, and literally posts a pic of it being towed after the engine locked up. Then he still asks $6000 for it?! Keep looking man. We'll help you.
I don't know, Doc, "IF" all it needed was a new SBC, it could be a deal. They don't cost anything, right?!
Seriously, the sheet metal appears to be clean, and if the clip etc was done right, I've seen worse deals. Prices around here are thru the roof thanks to word getting out about our rust-free tin.
He's supposed to send better pics on Monday, it's hard to tell how the body/paint is. If it truly only needs a motor swap to be a daily driver then I can do that myself. It just concerns me that he ran it out of oil, doesn't leave much faith in how well he took care of it. He told me he'd take 4k for it, just don't want to make a 4 hour round trip for nothing
Ross, if you get to take a look, be sure to let us know about it.
The $4K figure sounds much better. Blowing the engine sure makes you wonder about the rest of the work.
I talked to the guy, the truck is not at his house, it's at a shop that is closed today. I wanted to look at something right close to the shop so will likely head down there tomorrow. From my chat with the owner, he really doesn't know much about the truck (details of clip, etc) but he was using it as a DD for quite a while. To be honest, after talking to him, I don't think it seized due to lack of oil.
Ok, he must have told you something different, he told me "ran it out of oil, crank shaft won't spin freely", that makes me curious. He may have learned a lesson from telling me that.
I was also curious about that swap, I wonder if it is the swap for suspension and disc brakes. Edited to add this barely readable statement.
I am inferring that lack of oil may not be the problem, because he says it only puffed blue smoke on start-up and didn't leak to speak of. There are any number of other things that could cause it to lock up, like a broken timing chain. Kind of irrelevant, it needs a new engine. That's a very quantifiable expense, as little as $500 or as much as you want to spend. The ad says it has a Camaro front end, that's almost always a clip job. It has a 9" rear and a TH350 trans (no overdrive).
I went to look at the truck today. Overall, it could be a deal. Sheet metal is just starting to rust thru in the "usual places", not bondo'd as far as I can tell. Some dents and dings, and the flat black paint is a quick and dirty job. Wiring needs organization at the least, if not totally redone. The Camaro clip appears to be sturdily attached but I couldn't get under it to see all of it. Interior is dirty, but mostly intact. Some new rubber around glass.
Well it certainly doesn't appear to be in the condition I was expecting, you may have saved me a trip up there if he sticks to the 4k number. I was hoping for just a motor swap and make it a daily driver, that rust looks pretty nasty. I really appreciate you going and taking a look for me, I certainly owe you one

I'd have to say this has less rust than any Bonus Built I've seen in the last 10 years, that hadn't already been restored. If you want ready to go with no rust, DD reliability, you'll pay in the $12k - $15k range.
