Check the trans cooler. Ford in 99 or 2000 went to a larger cooler in the SD. Rember heat is the killer of transmissions. Also you can consider using a synthic fluid as they handle heat better than dino.

Installed a mechanical gauge and started out to my brother-in-laws place(45 min. away),he was going away for the weekend so we decided to turn around.Got back home and broke a brake line,if it isn't one thing it's another. On the short drive the gauge never went above 205,so maybe it was just the factory gauge after all.Plus the new rad hose, the rad fluid stayed up where it should have.I'll know better when I get the brake line fixed and tow the tt a ways.

Brother-in-law checked out the truck.Thought maybe the water pump impeller may be some of the trouble.Going to have it pulled off and checked next week. Also said clutch fan is weak,so I'll get another andtry it.
Does anyone have any idea of what kind of temps I could expect on a mechanical gauge while towing a tt on a 4 hr one way trip?
Drove down the highway about 80mph (without a tt)and the gauge never went over 200-205 .So I guess the rad hose leaking was some ,if not all ,the trouble.

NSANT,
I'm not sure about the temp. range but want to let you know that my 160* t'stat idea was not such a good idea. Look at the thread that 89broncobob started with subject antifreeze coolent[B], and then make your decision.

Like you said, it could have been the hole in the rad. hose that was your problem.

I've never ran an electric cooling fan, but might be something worth looking into.

Well we made it back.On the trip up the engine never went over 210 ,which is ok I guess considering it was 90f out side,on steep hills. The problem is still the transmission. The floor was quite warm to the touch,on the passenger side my wife said she found it much warmer. It shouldn't get that warm should it?I think I've got to get a larger transmission cooler.

Yea, Sounds like you are on the right track - with the temp at 90* outside, i would think a larger cooler would have to help.

Could the trannie cooler get "gummed" up?The truck has 130,000 miles on it.I bought a new cooler and am going to install it today. We are going camping again this weekend, that'll be the real test.

Not sure about the gummed up - i would think that bent fins or bugs on face of cooler would decrease cooling. It will be interesting to know if when you replace it thick tranny fluid comes out of the cooler.

Camping huh, sounds like the thing to do

NSANT, So you put a sep. cooling system temp on? How hard was the install. I'm thinking about getting one. Thanks.

I replaced the original factory trannie cooler in about an hour with a cooler from "Derale".Easy to do,Haven't got a trannie Temp gauge yet tho.Should get one to be sure how hot it gets, maybe next month. The new cooler has larger tubes,so I'm hoping it cools better than the factory stacked plate design,Not sure tho we'll find out tommorrow.I'll try to let you know soon.

NSANT,
1)Was the "Derale" cooler larger in surface size also?
2)Does it hold more fluid than the factory model?
3)When you disconnected the old aux cooler, did any gunk come out?
4)Are you running the aux cooler and the rad. tranny cooler, or is the tranny lines running straight to the "Derale"?

Sorry for question overload, i'm considering a larger camper to pull and want my tranny to continue to keep "cool"

3bronco......no problem.
1.Yes the Derale cooler is larger in surface size.
2.I'm not sure if it holds more fluid, but I don't think so.
3.Nothing unusual came out of the old cooler.
4.The new cooler is in-line with the rd-trannie cooler.

Warm floor board--> normal. Remember the exhaust is routed under passenger side. I thnk the only way to determine if the transmission really is running hot is to check it with a gauge. The bigger trans cooler is a good idea if the trans is O/D.
At 130K, I would replace the radiator, all of the hoses, and the water pump --> you won't be sorry. My radiator failed at about 140k. You don't need an electric fan. The factory heavy duty cooling is well designed. Check your fan clutch.
