Yes, another exhaust thread. I thought I'd post this here rather than the Exhaust section to here from some guys with similar/same motors.
I've got a 390 with an RV cam (I presume). It currently has dual exhaust. Not sure of the brand but it's a little mild. I'm in rural TX and don't have emission or noise regulations.
I'm looking for loud, poppin, throaty, floor n' roar, slap yo momma sound. I'm considering Headman short tube headers but I'm completely undecided on the brand and style of exhaust.
Hmmmm, Moroso Spiral Flows. Not familiar with them. I'll have to check em out.
What's the benefit of the long over the short tube?
How would you compare the sound between the Dynomax Race Bullets and the Moroso Spiral?
Long tubes are more efficient and generate more overall power... short tubes are in btwn long tubes and stock manifolds which suck donkey. Short tubes are also easier to install and don't trap the starter. Refer to the latest update of the Tech Thread Compilation and scroll down to the FE section for info on how bad stock manifolds are... the other option for long tubes are fenderwell exits from Hedman or Mad Dog headers.
Exhaust sound is highly subjective so it's up to you to decide what is "best" to you. I went with Morosos cuz glasspacks eventually blow out and I didn't want Flowmasters... plus the Spiral Flows are really compact.
My longtubes feed a cross-over tube so both tubes go down the right frame rail. Sound clip at the bottom at idle and high RPM.:
You could do headers and a pipe dumped at your pleasing I suppose. I would imagine it would make your ears bleed though.
Straight through designs-glass packs- all give pretty much the same sound regardless of brand. There are no chambers to change, only perforation and length. The shorter the louder.
I would opt for Summit Racings Street&Strip mufflers. They are about $30 each so running duals is easy on the wallet. You can search sound clips on YouTube.
Anyway you go, it is smart to have an X pipe or H pipe welded in for engine scavenging. An X pipe will be better for performance but it can be hard to fit one under our trucks, especially with outside of the frame headers.
My pickup has a 460, but I went with Hooker Super Competition headers, 40 series Flowmasters, and 3" pipe all the way to the back bumper. I really like the way it sounds from outside, and it is really quiet in the cab.

Perhaps you could help me better understand this. I'm new to this forum. I've seen the term 'scavenging' used in a few threads but I'm not sure I fully understand.
My understanding is that scavenging refers to the draft or pull behind each pulse of exhaust. I'm not sure how the H or X helps with this although I've seen it mentioned before.
For some reason, it's not visible on my end. I see 2 pics, but that's it. I've clicked on them to verify they're not in fact videos. I've also clicked all the visible links above and still no video.
I'm viewing on a iPhone and iPad. I've also clicked out of mobile mode to desktop/full site mode to see if it was a mobile glitch.
I trust it's there, but for some reason not visible on my end. Or at least not thru my beer goggles.

Dunno man... Apple must have a case against TinyPic or something. Use some normal hardware to check it out.

In a true dual setup each cylinder bank runs independently. With an X or H pipe the exhaust is blended and then goes out the back. The blending of exhaust gasses, especially in an X pipe help accelerate and more completely draw the spent gasses from the cylinders.
In theory all cylinders should preform exactly the same. In reality some preform better than others. The cross flow evens out the preformance on the exhaust side and aids a more complete combustion.
X pipes will show significant gains on the dyno and an H pipe will provide some improvement to the bottom end torque.
