I have a 2012 F350 Larriot dual wheel 4x4. Starter problem same as yours. Occasional spin with no engagement. New starter made no difference. It may go for as much as a month or 4 times in a week?????
You may have a damaged tooth on the flex plate and it's the law of averages when that position gets to the starter position.
We inspected fly wheel when installing new starter. There was no damage. When my starter spins there is no grinding just spin noise. Never does it 2 times in a row!!! I am suspecting a soft relay???
I've had 3 starters on my 20,000 mile '15. They replaced the flywheel the second time, but it's still doing it. Getting very frustrated!
I get the noisy no start infrequently, but I know it's got to strand me somewhere at some point.
Any solutions to this? I have a 100k 2011 that does this exact thing. May do it once a month or may do it 5 times a day. Batteries replaced and checked all starter connections with no change.
Spoke with a couple local specialist and they say starter too but I'm skeptical.

I have had the same thing happen twice. 2011 f450 6.7 145,000 miles.
My hearing is real bad but it also might be a no start condition. The engine might fire once and speed up, disengage the stated, then the engine stops and the starter is still spinning because the computer did sence that the engine started and kept the starter engaged, (I just tap the start switch and let the truck finish the start sequence when I start the truck)
Mine 2011 started doing this at the beginning of this year,, while is was a bit over 100,000 miles, but only when I used the key to start it. It never happened on remote start. I had it looked at a few months ago, under my ESP warranty, and they replaced the flywheel and starter. No problems since. The dealer said I had teeth missing on the flywheel.

Reason: Clarification
It seems to me if it were the flywheel it would not start on the 2,3,4th try on the starter. I'm mean the truck hasn't moved so the fly wheel is in the same place it was when the starter was free spinning? Mine starts instantly when the starter actually engages.
Also several reports of flywheel replacements and still have problem??
Well mine has gotten worse, free spins approx. 25% of the time. I decided to drop it off at a reputable local diesel shop with all the information at hand. Shop calls a couple hours later and says its the starter Bendix not engaging. Reman ford starter is 230$ plus labor with 2yr warrenty.
Got it repaired and picked up....3 turns of the key later its still doing it. Taking it back this am and will update as more info is available.
I've had good luck with those in my past F350. I couldn't see how a new starter over a Ford Reman would make any difference. At some point down the road a brand new starter for the 6.7l will not be available and only the reman will be obtainable. Now if it was one of those $199 lifetime Chinese reman specials then I would believe it. Had bad luck with those in the past. Finally got tired of R&Ring and returning those suckers, once I went with the Ford starter....no issues for over 10 years.

aftermarket will start making new starters for our 6.7s.. new starters are available for my 86 and 87 6.9 IDIs..
Well got a call back yesterday on the truck. Bad flex plate possibly due to bad welds from Ford. The more I read this is not uncommon but also not a huge issue on the 6.7s. Starter teeth were chewed up so I don't doubt that is.
Decided not to drop the additional 1050.00$ right now for a 100.00 part. Disappointed the tech didn't pick up on this the first go round when the starter was replaced. The chipped starter teeth should have been a big red flag.
I'm going to let it ride until I can afford to drop 1k on it or I cant take it any more.
