Upper Radiator Hose

My upper radiator hose left me stranded today. I ended up cutting it in half and using a piece of muffler pipe to make a sleeve to get me home.

My truck is a 66 F100 352/3 speed.

The aftermarket radiator was installed by the PO and has the upper outlet on the passenger side. I have no idea where he got the hose, it failed because it is to short and he stretched it to make it fit. Is that the correct location for the outlet?

It appears that the outlet on the radiator is 1 3/4in and the outlet on the thermostat housing is 2in.

I think the thermostat housing on my 75 parts truck 390/4v is 1 3/4in. Will that housing bolt to my 352 manifold? I have no idea how the 390/4v ended up in my parts truck, but its there.

The F100 is my DD and I need to get it on the road.

Passenger side is the correct upper orientation for the radiator. The original radiator connection was 2"; however most replacements have a 1 and 3/4" connection to "fit" a wider range of applications. The 390 thermostat housing will fit the 352 intake, but you may have to change thermostats if yours does not seat properly in the 390 housing -- in other words get a thermostat specific to the 390 (smaller flange diameter I believe). In my experience if you have a good parts store nearby with a good parts person they can find a molded hose to fit from what they stock.

I looked at Orielys, Advance, and Bumper2Bumper today.

The hose selection was very limited and they didn't have anything that came close to working. The problem is the 2in end.

Summit is about 30 minutes from me and they do have the proper hose for 1 3/4in ends.

I have a new 600cfm carb and a electronic dizzy that I need to install, Im lazy and don't have help to man handle that manifold so Ive been putting it off.

C5TZ-8260-J .. Upper Radiator Hose - 2.00" I.D. on both ends (Motorcraft KM-244) / Obsolete

Applications: 1965/66 F100/250 352 2WD with A/T & M/T

The thing is, this upper hose has been hard to find for over 20 years, since it only fits these trucks.

GREEN SALES CO. has 4 = 800-543-4959, otherwise it's desperation time: About your only choice is a flex hose.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1965/66 F100/250 352 4WD & F350 352 with SRW upper hose is also 2.00" I.D. but it's shaped differently. 1965/66 F350 352 with DRW upper hose is 1 3/4" I.D. on both ends.

1967/76 F100/350 FE upper radiator hoses (no A/C) are either 1 3/4" I.D. on both ends or 2.00" I.D. on both ends.

1968/76 F100/350 360/390 with factory A/C: 1 3/4" on the radiator end, 2.00" I.D. on the thermostat housing end.

If summit is that close you should be able to piece something together fairly easily (but probably not that cheaply). They sell hose sections that covert from 1&3/4" to 2", use this in conjunction with assorted metal components they carry (45 degree, 90 degree, etc). and a standard straight piece of hose to make the change. As a last resort gates sells flex hoses that are different sizes on each end -- just keep in mind they will place stress on the radiator connection. The stress can be overcome if you fabricate a support that will relieve the stress vector. Sounds like you have parts stores, but maybe not the correct counter person. I would use the 390 housing and ask parts store to look up the upper radiator hose for a 68 to ???not sure with a 360 or 390 engine and examine.

I went back and looked at the hoses myself. They stock what they sell and Ive got one of the few vehicles in this area that use a hose that big.

This is a good excuse to do the manifold and dizzy swap. Ive got all the parts, just haven't had the motivation.

Autozone had a couple hoses for a 75 F100 390.

C70737 has a 1 3/4 inlet and a 2 inlet. The 2 inlet is on the wrong side and the hose is molded opposite of what I need for my 66. No way it will work.

C70682 has 1 3/4 on both ends and looks to be molded correctly. Tomorrow Im off to the field where my parts truck is to get the 1 3/4 outlet off the manifold.

Is 190 the correct thermostat?

This morning I pulled the thermostat housing off the parts truck, it had a 1 3/4in outlet, so now both ends match at 1 3/4in.

The upper radiator hose I bought at AZ worked perfectly, I had to trim about an inch off the radiator side, but it was molded correctly and fit like a glove.

I have had my 66 F100 for 2 years, the PO installed a new radiator and water pump, I have long suspected that he did not install a thermostat.

When I puled the housing off today I saw that there was a 195 degree thermostat but when he installed it, it had slipped down out of the groove it sits in. In effect there was a bypass that allowed coolant to flow all the time. Now that it is installed correctly, the truck warms right up and the temp needle sits right in the middle of the gauge.

Maybe my mileage will increase and I can have heat and defrost.

Anyway, $20 in parts and a couple hours and Im back on the road.

Upon further review I think a 180 vice 195 thermostat would be a better choice.

Advance only had a 195, the next closest parts store is about 10 miles away. Nothing is easy.

Since the engine now comes up to temp, I think that Im going to have to readjust the carb, it seems to be running rich.

1966 and earlier use a t/stat that is 2 1/2" diameter. 1967 and later t/stat is 2 1/4" diameter.

The problem is the donor truck is a 75, I have no idea what the engine came out of. It has a factory cast iron 4V manifold, so it doesn't belong where its at.

Since the thermostat outlet is 1 3/4in vice 2in does that indicate a 67+ housing?

If it helps any, below are the #s and letters that are on the paper band that is on my upper radiator hose. I remember a few yrs ago having a problem of finding the upper hose. I the guy at the parts store really helped me out and ended ordering 4 or 5 different hoses and one ended up being the correct one. Anyway, it the one that fits on the 65 -66. 2" at both ends. If you radiator or therm housing neck it 1 3/4", you can use the rubber inserts that will reduce the opening. They are made just for that purpose. SO, if it helps, take a look at the info see if you can find it on line or at the parts store.
Maybe Bill can use the #s to find out how may have it. The should be able to cross reference it somewhere...

Made in mexico
065 M
14-1968-0 M 60893
Bar code # 0 37256 00065 2
Also, every few inches along the hose, it has the letters 'AU' the entire length of the hose.

I used the housing off my parts truck and found a hose with 1 3/4 on both ends.

All is well now except I don't like the 195 thermostat that's in there, I want to go with a 180.

Ive got a feeling that the 390 in my 75 F100 parts truck used to be in a car and does not belong in the truck.
