Should you go with a different tuner like the ones many of us use, don't be hard on yourself for not making the switch earlier.
Seriously, you will like the improvement!
To give you an idea how generic these off the shelf programmers can be, the superchips programmer i had was usable for 4.6, 5.4, 6.8 gas engines and the 7.3 and 6.0 diesels.
It was still a significant improvement over stock, but can't compare to a chip tuned specifically to your engine and set up.
I personally run Swamps. But any of the ones mentioned by Jason (HKusp) are worthy. While you can get many tunes on a chip, you will find that you will spend probably 95% of your driving on one specific tune. A High Idle setting is one that comes in handy for warm-up in the winter, or cooling down in the summer with the AC. All of those companies can change the tuning too if some day you get different injectors. Tuning for the 7.3 has changed over the years. About 3 years ago, I had my tunes updated from Swamps. Same tunes, but considerably more power, with a lot less smoke. I don't know if the other companies like Edge or Bully Dog have done that with our motors. I think they focus on the newest/latest-greatest out there and let the 10 and 15 year old stuff go by the wayside.
It depends on what you want/need. The forum sponsor DP Tuner has been used by many( including myself for 6+years), PHP has the Hydra which many other tuning companys have access to and can do their own custom tunes. There is Gearhead, Swamps, Brian at BTS, etc. All of them have greqt tunes and most have very good customer support. Tell us more about what you want, ie: switch on the fly, between tow, high idle, daily driver, race tunes, etc. do you need or want monitoring of parameters, etc.?
Mainly, just better economy, smoother shifting and more towing power. I don't need to stomp ricers at stop lights anymore.
