Bought a brand new cover from the dealer, black plastic piece that says Powerstroke and goes in front of the fuel bowl, and it bumps up against the ac compressor. Is this normal or am I supposed to trim it? Is it possible they gave me one for a 6.0? Seems odd they could screw this up ....
I might be captain obvious here, but personally I've found that the '00 cover won't fit on my '03, and vice versa IIRC. Maybe you just got the later model cover?
WOW!! I had NO idea that there was a second version for 7.3s
I have a LATE '99 and mine is the one in the first picture.
I wonder when the chance happened build date wise?
Whats different in the area from '99 to '00 to need this change?
Well crap .... The one that they gave me that does not fit is the second picture. I believe my trucks build date is 10/00 so it probably used the last of those ones .... I have no problem modifying the one I bought but trying to make everything under the hood appear factory so I would prefer not to. Seems odd that they would change that if the motor and everything else is the same. And it begins .....
Wasn't there also a third version/later version that had a door in it so you could change the fuel filter without removing it?
The "third" version (as well as the fourth!) were actually EARLIER versions (with the flip up lid) that were larger and covered up more of the top. They were for the 94-97 model years that had the different fuel pump system.
With each successive redesign, the cover got smaller and smaller.
The final design, from 2001 to 2003, is the second picture of the two images above, that only says "POWER STROKE". All of the previous versions have more writing, like 7.3 Liter etc.
In either late 2001 or early 2001 I placed an order for a replacement engine cover for my 2000 model year which looks like the first picture, and the cover that looks like the second picture was shipped to me, with NO CHANGE IN PART NUMBER! There was no superseded suffix at the end, such as "AA" to "AB". Just a new cover that didn't match. So, I decided not to modify my original cover as previously planned, because even as early as back then, I would not be able to replace it through Ford.
If this was the case over a decade ago, then it stands to reason that it remains the case today. However, Bonanza 35 has posted below that he was able to get one last year... the same one I tried to get 10 years earlier. So I had to go back and edit this post to correct my assumption that the earlier ones were no longer available through Ford.
I'm actually looking for another new style engine cover like the one you received (not for my engine).
Problem solved. Returning the plastic cover and for $20 more getting a nice SS from Dfuser. Looks way nicer and will dress up the whole area .... And if it happens to hide a few other modifications that may or may not be there then cool

Ford has not sold the engine cover in the first picture in over 10 years. If this was the case over a decade ago, then it stands to reason that it remains the case today. If you want the original as built engine cover, you will have to look for a used one (that isn't cracked, painted red, drilled through, etc) for a 1999 - 2001, which includes the early 99's built in 1998.

I hate to say your wrong because I like your posts but I bought the first picture last year from ford. The part number is#F81A 6A949AB. I haven't even installed it yet so I have it in my hand. The last one was broke by a fool who was suppost to be resealing my Diff. What he was doing up there I don't know. Anyway I just thought I would post this guys.
