I have a 1993 Aerostar that has an intermediate transmission leak (puddle about 10 inches around). About 6 weeks ago it leaked oil (about 10 inches around) then stopped to a small drop every couple days. Suddenly it started to leak again yesterday. Has anyone out there had the same problem? What causes it? Can it be fixed short of pulling the transmission? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Is it coming from the rear of the transmission? It is then probably the slip yoke seal. It would leak more if parked on an incline(engine higher) It could be alot of things. just look where it is coming from
First you got to find the leak... assuming it's an automatic, is it the front seal, output shaft seals, pan gasket, servo? Then you can figure out if the unit needs to be pulled.
How many miles? Fluid funky and smell burned? Keep a check on the fluid level and replace what leaks out if you continue to drive it.
Thanks for the reply. The van has 87000 miles on it. the oil leaking out is clean and does not smell burnt. As of this moment the leak has slowed down again. Sure has me guessing. thanks.

Thanks for the reply. No dings in the pan. Oil is dripping out at the front end of the transmission. Today the leak has slowed down same as it did last time. Made a big mess in the drive way for the past couple days, but today was very little. Got me puzzled. Thanks again for the reply.
Maybe check the vent plug, if blocked pressure could be forcing fluid past the seals. Give the tranny a really good clean and git all the dirt and crud off it
