97 E-150 knocks sputters under load
Sputters, pings, engine shakes under load. Check engine light comes on. Code is Cyl 6 misfireing, overly lean condition. Cannot compindsate for overly lean condition. This has been getting worse for the last two years. This is what has been done so far.
Complete tuneup last year. Wires, plugs, cap, all filters, tranny flush, engine motovac, idel air control, still no help. Local mechanic said the eec lV said the van is at 3000ft above sea level . I live near sea level.
SO I took the eec lV to Visteon where the unit is made (wife works there), and it tested good. Engineer does not know what the mechanic is talking about with the altitude thing. They gave me a new MAF to install. Still does the same thing. SO I took the entire van to the factory. The engineer hooked up the van and said all the electronics check out OK, must be the fuel regulator or fuel pump. The local garage tested the fuel flow and volume which checked out to speck. I told the mechanic to replace the fuel regulator. The van still throws the same codes. Could it be the fuel pump?
P.S. I gave up on the local mechanic and will now do the work myself.

I'm going to move your question over to the 87-96 forum where you will probably get more responses.
If you can get the injectors flow tested that might tell you something. Like lxman said I wouldnt be surprised if you had a bad injector. Also check very carefully for vacuum leaks.
I nor the mechanic could not find a vacuum leak, also I would assume the EGR was tested OK by the factory with the rest of the electronic's.
The Data link in under the dash. I had the engine motovac'ed. Won't this clean out the injectors? Also the engine pings slightly under the slightest load, also it occasionly misses at idle. I took it for a test ride last night up the PA turnpike, found a hill, and lugged the engine. The light came on and the engine started to miss very bad, shake and shutter, untill I let off the gas. This started about two years ago with just pinging. It is getting worse as time goes by. But it has improved with the engine cleaning last week.
Should I clean the #6 fuel injector as per an earlier post, or just replace it since I will have it apart to clean? $ for an injector.
Thanks for all your help..............
Sometimes codes only show up while the engine is actually having the problem. Make the problem worse, and you have a better chance of the pcm posting a code.
Regards, Robert.
