A little info: 1977 F-250 Highboy 460 4 speed. Adjustable rocker arms.
On my way to work this morning I noticed my oil pressure was at 40 psi. Normally, when it's cold, it's at 70 psi. I came up to a stop light, had my window partially down, and started to hear a tick. I looked at my oil pressure and it was a 5 psi, normally 20 psi at an idle. As I sat there the ticking got a lot louder. I revved it up and the oil pressure came up, and the ticking got quieter. I took off from the light and my oil pressure jumped up to 70 psi for a few seconds and the ticking went away. Then the oil pressure went back down to 40 psi and the ticking would come back. It did this all the way to work at every stop light. It is missing a little bit, but it is not a completely dead hole.
I am going to take the valve covers off when I get home to see what I can find.
So far this is what I have came up with at work what it could be:
Collapsed lifter
Bend push rod
Something with the rocker arm
Broken valve spring
Bad oil pump
If you have any other ideas for me to check, throw them my way!
Here is a video of me starting it after work. The ticking wasn't that bad when I started it, but it is definitely coming from the left bank. The oil pressure never fluctuates like that either.
Ya, videos are always so hard to hear properly. But youre right the pressure gauge bouncing is uncommon, my 76 460 is fairly smooth. The possible problems you mentioned wont cause the pressure problem, more likely they are symptoms from it. The bouncing pressure could be related to a sticking relief valve or a blocked filter causing that valve to pop often. Have you changed your oil recently? What kind do you use? I use 15/40 rotella t now and noticed a much steadier gauge and higher average. It is a great, tough and well tested oil. Might be worth a shot, its amcheap try anyway
The problems I mentioned WILL cause oil pressure problems if a lifter is not in it's hole, or is rising too far out of its spot. The oil will dump on top of the camshaft.
I am running Valvoline 20w-50. I have been running the same oil in this truck for 15 years now. I only drive it about 1000 miles a year, and I do the oil changes once a year, so there is probably about 700 miles on the oil right now.
I have the problem narrowed down some. The #7 cylinder intake push rod moves lower into the valley after a few seconds of running. As soon as it drops down, the ticking starts and the oil pressure drops. I think the lifter is collapsing. When I rev the engine up to build the oil pressure up, the pushrod comes back up and the ticking stops. When I let off the throttle, it does the same thing after about two or three seconds.
I pulled the intake and distributer and ran a drill on the oil pump and this is what I found. Then I rolled the motor over a couple of revolutions and it quit leaking. Is this normal?
Sounds to me like a lifter issue. Might as well swap them all if the bores mic out. Unless you have a leak, or bad oil pump where else would the pressure go?
I hate shotguning repairs, but I am going to throw in a set of Comp lifters and see what happens. The engine is a short block I bought from the local dealer almost ten years ago. When I got it I slammed a Comp Cam in it and used the lifters that came with the short block. I am thinking they might have been some garbage Chinese lifters.

I hate doing that as well. Stuff like lifters though, if your replacing one may as well do them all. If not, it's just like a shotty shop that replaces just one main bearing or a non weight matched piston on a rebuild. Stuff like that you know.
Well, the cam is shot. So I am going to change things up a bit with the motor. I am going to go with a Comp Xtreme 4x4 34-231-4 cam instead of the 34-235-4 cam. I am also going to ditch the Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and am going to put on an Edelbrock Performer intake on. I am also going to get the headers re-powder coated.
The truck has been set up like this for about 12 years now, so it's time for a change.
