Have a 97 f150 with the 4.6 auto, need to know how to clean the egr ports. ford thinks that they are clogged. dont want to give ford anymore money, if i can fix this myself. thanks
Happy 4th to ya. I just had one of these problems, it seems to be happening on the higher mileage engines now. I would remove the throttle body first and do a good cleaning of it while i am at it. Try not to let cleaner run into the tps switch while cleaning. Next i would remove the part that bolts to the intake and and throttle body, and clean the egr ports real good, make sure you get all the stuff out of them. I would also clean the AIC area on the thottle body as well after removing the air inlet controler, or the idle control solenoid. Make sure the TPS is pluged in correctly when done Good luck let us know how it goes.
Thanks for the info, I took everything off over the weekend and cleaned them. The EGR ports were plugged very bad, everything else looked to be fairly clean. I reinstalled, and it seems to have fixed the problem. Once again, thanks for your help.
I have the same problem with my 98 F-150 4x4 4.6. I took it to the Ford dealer. They said the EGR ports were cloged. Where are the EGR ports? I might try to clean them myself.
