Help identifying rear differential

It's an 85 F150 4x4 with an IL 6 with 3 speed auto. Thinking about replacing fluids in both rear and front. Not sure where to start.

It should be a Ford 9 inch, a Ford 8.8, or possible a Dana 60-2. I don't know if they put a Dana 60-2 under a half ton in the 80's. I know they did in the 60's.

The 9 inch looks like this...

The 8.8 looks like this..,.

The Dana 60 looks like this...

If there are other options, or God forbid I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to point that out.

The front is a D44 TTB. You need to figure out if they are limited slip or not because the LS diffs take a friction modifier. Without it the clutches will burn up and frag the entire rear end.

You need to look for a tag hanging on the bolts of the cover. If it still has it on there post up the numbers and letters.

Never heard that and never had it happen. Most of these limited slips by now are wore out anyway and don't do much.

It happened to the rear end in my Dodge 1/2 ton. The clutches and steels went to pieces, then through the R&P as well as the pinions.Just the parts were over $500 to rebuild it. If my buddy wasn't a well seasoned rear end guy the bill would have been close to $1200.

This is from experience not just something I heard on the net.

Just running straight gear oil and not the stuff specified for LS or adding the friction modifier is bad news.

Here are the numbers that I can read off the tag on the rear diff.

Top row. BDR And then AN21
Bottom row. 5588 S 808A

I think some of the numbers/letters are missing from the top row but that is all that is legible.

Bottom row, there's a "3" missing from the beginning, but it's a 3.55 ratio 8.8.
If you look closely, near the bolt head, you'll see the missing 3. That's not important. There *could* be an "L" between the 3 and 55. That would indicate a LS axle. Just a blank space (it's really a ".") would indicate a non-LS axle.

What would LS or non LS mean for the potential difference in gear fluid needed? Do I need to crawl back under there and take a better look?

Yeah, time to crawl back down there. The LS is more expensive to fix, so make sure you are giving it the right gear oil.

Limited Slip (LS) need gear oil with a friction modifier. You can by oil like that, or just get the additive

There should be a code on the door that will tell you what rear you have and if its ls.
