I wanna do an oil change for the summer coming up on my new truck but, im not sure what oil i should run. i just got this truck i highly dought it has ever had synthetic oil but im leaning that way. Its my daily driver weekend warrior type driving. in a hot temperatures with about 170000km on the truck(about 105000miles) what do you guys think?
Too late to go with synthetic now IMO. The synthetic will breakdown old oil deposits that could be stopping any leaks. In my 94 4.9L I run straight 10-30w in winter and 10-30 with 1 quart substituted for Lucas oil stabilizer in the summer (so-cal desert where temps reach 120) I had an old 88 jeep Comanche with 125000mi on it and when I went to synthetic oil leaks sprouted up.
I made the mistake of trying to convert my 90 to synthetic at 194k and had lots of small leaks. Been using Valvoline 10w-30 conventional for 4years and love it. I do use the NextGen 50% recycled oil when I can. One less dead dinosaur to lubricate my crankshaft
My old man used to work on the wind turbines out here in so cal for a German company called Nordex. He told me they used motor oil in the wind turbine gearboxes and bought just about every brand you could think of, had them sent back to Germany for tests and valvoline came out #1. I've used only valvoline ever since
I run penzoil 10w-40 high mileage and it increased my oil pressure. My engine runs like a top. I then replaced 1 quart of it with this every oil change with a fresh oil filter. I'd definitely recommend it.
I replaced my engine about 10k miles ago, so all I've run with the new motor has been full synthetic. I'm currently using Mobile 1 Full Synthetic 10W-30. Its good for the wide range of temperature we see up here in Colorado, from 100F high in the summer to -30F in the winter. If you live in a climate where it doesn't usually get below 30 or 40F then 10W-40 would be what I'd run. Overall I run a different brand oil each change with the truck to see what she likes best then stick with that. YMMV
I wouldn't use synthetic unless it's a fresh rebuild or it's already been run on synthetic. Synthetic doesn't cause about it. Besides, if it likes conventional oil, stick with it. Don't poke the bear.
I'm pretty sure if I ran synthetic in my engine, I'd wake up the next day and find out that the driveway is now well lubricated. My engine has the premium "Rust Prevention System" where it automatically coats itself in grease. None of it touches the ground, so it's clearly working properly
I'd suggest doing a little reading over at BITOG. Also, you neglected to mention what engine we're even talking about here, what oil you're currently running, and what oil pressures you're currently seeing (provided you're using a real oil pressure gauge).
