Stupid stupidness......

So I am working on getting together all the parts to fix up my truck....

Here is the what's wrong list:

1. AC compressor seized (and it's about to get hot here)
2. Oil cooler is leaking everywhere

And then the "while you are in there" list is as follows:

dual tensioner mod
IH Pump swap
203 t-stat
Gooch's coolant flush
Oil Change

The connections on the water pump are seeping anyway so I might as well change everything out.

NOW... the stupid stupidness part...

I have called just about every parts store in town (even the NAPA's and the other good non-chain stores) and no one even knows what SCA is and no one carries it.

I know I could use the green stuff and just add SCA but I'd rather have a non green coolant so as to remind people that it is not just regular stuff.

Grrr... and here is the kicker.... I am fairly sure that if I drive around to the various stores I could find it on the shelf. I can also order it from Amazon but it'll cost a bit more (might be worth it).

Amazon has the Prestone Heavy duty (AF977) for $17.50/gal. Plus, purple coolant is what all the cool kids have...

Richard

EDT: amazon supply has the six pack for ~$68... that's just over $11/gal

Where are you in southern Arizona?
I know you can get it in Tucson and Yuma.
Cat is the easiest.

I am just outside Tucson. I have to be careful about coolants with OAT's (like ELC).

My injector cups have never been changed so the sealant on them can be dissolved by OAT's an I really don't want to do injector cups right now... I am looking at almost $1k in parts and tools for everything now.

Instead of paying someone for the AC flush, vacuum, and charge, I can get the tools my self for less than the service (about $190 in tools).

I can get a 6 pack of the Prestone AF977 from amazon supply for less than 4 of the singles....

Anyone in/near Tucson need some coolant? I'll have a couple extra gallons.

They may call it DCA and not SCA. Seems like you might just be talking to the "new kid" when you call. So that Prestone AF977 that you're listing is just the regular old green coolant that is pre-charged with SCA? If that's the case, you'll have to share your source, because that's a good price for sure. I'm paying more than that per gallon of the regular green stuff with no SCA.

Have you looked for Fleetcharge coolant? That is supposed to be pre-charged as well and most of teh NAPA stores around here carry the stuff. I can't say if they do that all across the nation or not though. This is farm country, there are LOTS of diesel tractors!

Hey Nate, do you happen to have a part number for the napa stuff? I've scoured their website (We use them for parts here at the shop) and I cant find the stuff to save my life.

I didn't use the Fleetcharge, what I used was NAPAKool SCA additive. It's part number 4058 at NAPA.

http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...058_0429168785

From what I'm seeing you can buy the Fleetcharge Coolant by the gallon (undiluted) and it is part number FAF FCA003
http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...003_0424509935
Or as an alternative, you can get the premixed stuff and forgo the trip to Wallyworld for the distilled water and it is part number FAF FCA053.

For my money I buy the undiluted stuff and a gallon of distilled water for about a buck. It's a better value that way and it ensures that you get enough coolant into the system after a flush.

Prestone (AF977-6PK) Heavy Duty Pre-Charge Antifreeze/Coolant - 1 Gallon, (Pack of 6) | AmazonSupply.com

here is where I found it for ~$11/ gal.... you just have to buy a 6pack...

I looked for fleetcharge but all I could find was the ELC stuff.

Prestone AF977 is actually purple according to all the docs, but I imagine it's a low silicate version of the green stuff with the SCA pre-added.

As it never freezes here I was thinking of running 3 gal of concentrate instead of 4 as in Gooch's procedure but I have not decided.

Napa indicated they had Final Charge (OAT) but not Fleet Charge and thy wanted $19/gal.

I figured if I am going to have to order it, I might as well save the 2% sales tax and get it from Amazon cheaper....

Advance Auto has FleetCharge, $15-16 / gal. Order online for in-store pickup, they always have a 20% discount code active (check retailmenot.com), takes it to $12/gal.

So is that AF977 definitely NON-ELC?

just because they do not stock it does not mean they can not order it. it is a stock item in the warehouse.
