I'm the primary driver of a 1987 E-350 school bus belonging to a non-profit animal rescue group and I have a question about something it's doing. It's driven once a week, about 50 miles round trip. On the first 25 mile trip it runs great with no problems. After sitting for about 3½ hours it's started up again, goes for 4-5 miles and dies. After sitting for about 10 minutes it will start again and make the rest of the trip without a problem. This has now happened 3 weeks in a row so there has to be something specific that is going on with it.
We've already had the mechanical fuel pump replaced and the carburetor rebuilt and I'm hoping the solution might be something simple that I could take care of myself to save the group from having to put too much more money into the bus. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Sounds like a problem I had with a '89 E250, years ago (12+ years)
Solved the problem with the wire connectors at the "firewall", just under the hood, above the engine. There are 4 or 5 engine to body connectors, and after getting it running one day after the sudden quit, was twisting the connectors, and it shut down, ended up splicing each wire and eliminated the connectors
Also solve a couple of other problems I was having, like the cruse control started working again.
