Just recently bought a 1990 F150 w/ 302 EFI. Did a tuneup consisting of plugs/wires, rotor, cap, fuel and air filter, PCV valve. It ran pretty rough before the tuneup. Now, when I hit about 35-40 mph and step on the gas, it misses and jerks really bad. Plus the low speed idle is still very poor. Any ideas?
Between 40 and 45 Miles per hour on an automatic tranny (in normal driving) is when the torque converter locks in. If the jerking feels like you are driving over a washboard, then this could be the culprit. It may have a hard time locking in. If you do have an auto trans, then take the over drive off and see if it still does it. If so, then its not the converter. Does it do it at any other speeds? Does your CE light come on?
When it happens, if I hit the gas really hard and the tranny kicks down, then it stops. But, as soon as I let up on it and try to mildly accelerate, it starts again. But that is exactly what it feels like - driving over a washboard. No lights come on.
