Replacing timing chain

Time to get at my oil leaking 360 ('68) and get it cleaned up. I'm ordering some valve cover and pan gaskets and was thinking I should order a timing chain and sprocket set. Anything else for parts I should order to do the timing set besides the cover gasket?

Front crankshaft seal. A can or two o' paint. Silicone gasket sealer. Note #1. A thin layer of silicone gasket sealer around the outer perimeter of the c/s seal will help it install easier and help seal it. Note # 2. Use it sparingly on the gaskets also. You want the gaskets to work not the sealer.

Also water pump gaskets, small short pesky hose from back of water pump to manifold and a fuel pump gasket. Get a good replacement timing chain set. Something like comp cams or equivalent. Don't forget a case of your favorite beverage

2 X Crazed. I forgot about the by-pass hose. Before putting everything back together 1st clamp the correct length hose on the manifold. That way it's already there as you slide everything in place.

Check to see if the seal has worn a groove in the crank that might cause a leak. You can buy a sleeve pretty cheap if there's a problem there.

Most also important lube up the lips of the new crank seal, if not you'll burn it from being dry. Then you get to replace it again now that you know how to do it right the 2th time.

Hmmm a case of my favorite beverage? No wonder the crank wouldn't fit in the cam holes.

Is that by pass hose a special part or just stock hose?

Regular heater hose. A lot of guys put an extra hose clamp in the center area to help keep it from swelling up. As it gets old the center expands and forms little cracks inside
that leads to a leak over a number of yrs. Depending on a warm climate and how hot of thermostat used. Kind of extends the hose life some. No need to over tighten it it's just to hold the shape.

Did mine about a month ago, week later water pump started to leak out of the weap hole. Bearings and everything seemed fine but the next weekend I had to replace it instead of putting on my new intake manifold. If your pump is old or you don't know how old it is I would replace it. They run less than 40 bucks for a rebuilt.

Yea when the shixts starts to happens its best to change now. Oh yeah cheap insurance just to replace it while it's off. That's what I do myself. Don't wait for it to go bad out on the road, or on a long distance trip.

"Preventative Maintenance" always wins out and keeps you happy motoring.

IMHO that is money well spent and cheap insurance.

I got one at O'Reilly (rebuilt) for less than $20 a couple of weeks ago, only has a year warranty though. They even had it in stock.....

2X Orich. But make sure you use quality heater hose. Look for some good braiding inside it. Molded in the rubber.
