Hey guys, I got a 98 F150 with a 4.6L V8. I really want a bigger beefier motor and i was just curious if a I could drop a 351 Cleveland in that thing and get rid of that puny V8 its got right now.
Also, do yall think it'll hook up with my tranny, I doubt it, but im just curious, I got a 4 speed automatic.
I heard Cleveland's were some of the best motors, better than 350's ?
Like I said, I'm just curious.
Nope.
You will need everything, engine, tranny, driveline, rearend and all the crossmembers. The only thats the same between your truck and the 70-74 Ranchero, thats the vehicle you should get your stuff from, is the Twin I-Beam frame.
Also to complicate your situation further, most states won't let you put an older engine in a newer truck because of the emissions regulations. Too bad you are just curious.
Niether the Ranchero nor the 98 F-150 are Twin I-Beam. The last F-150 to use Twin I-Beam was the 1996 model year. The Ranchero was always car based, first off the Fairlane in the 1950's and the last off of the T-bird/Cougar platform of the 1970's.
If you really want a bigger motor in your F-150, there ore tons of all Ford wreacking yards that will sell you a 5.4 with it's computer and tranny. That motor is a tall-deck version of the 4.6 and will bolt in. If you look around and are willing to spend around $10K for a complete swap and drivetrain upgrade, you could drop in a supercharged 5.4 from the Lightening.
I think your emissions restrictions might be a stumbling block. But if your "NASCARTruckDude" handle is any indication of your preferences, you most definitely would want a 1970 version of the 351-C and a hopped up C-4 trans.
The 351-C 4bbl came from the factory with 300HP and can be built for high-rpm performance. It is capable of lifting the front wheels of most Ford cars off the ground. On the other hand, the 5.4 comes with 260HP (btw that ain't too bad - compare to a 351-C 2bbl at 250HP), but it is built with a torque emphasis. I also do not think a 5.4 would be inexpensive...that bugger is a costly option in the higher end newer Ford trucks.
If you want a "NASTRUCK" to scream down the quarter and lick anything in its path, go with the 351-C. If you want great all-around performance with the option of having your truck act like a truck instead of a beast, go with the 5.4
You can get some really good power out of those mod motors. Look at the Mustangs.
There are several add-ons and modifications that can be done. Ask the guys on the other part of the forum. The mod motors will make respectable street power and make a lot better fuel efficiency. You can buy mod parts with the tons of money you will save.
If you want to do "old school", you'd be better off getting an older truck in good condition and renovating it. That's what I'm doing.
Ditto the emissions comments... I'm also in TX - I had an 85 Jeep I loved, but couldn't get to pass emissions. The only mods were an emissions calibrated Edelbrock carb and intake, and headers... (part of the long story about why the 63 is sitting on J10 running gear...) And they are getting more strict about it all the time...
The 4.6 sohc is 28" long, 26" high, and 28 5/8 wide. The dohc version is same length but 30" wide and 29 7/8" tall. As you can tell these motors are quite large. The 302/351w motors are about 27 1/2" long. 302 width is 18 3/4' and 351 width is 21". The 460 is 32" long, 26" high, and 26" wide. 351w crate engines are approx 545 lbs, 460 cj approx 670, and the 514 is the same weight as the 460. Just threw in the 514 for the hell of it. I dont know about the 335 series engines(351c,m, 400m). i imagine the 5.4 is pretty large. One thing is that mod motors are definately big. Ive seen them stuffed in a ranchero before and there isnt much room left in the compartment. i recommend going with a stroker of the 351w or 351m. if you can find some aussie heads for a 335 series id suggest going with that.Im working on my 351m i have turned into a 408 stroker. Once i get that done and get a few more bucks planning on some aussie heads for even more power. The 408 may not have great gas mileage but if your worried about mpg go get a 4 banger car. thats just my opinion. Hopes this helps. if ya have any more questions i may be able to help so just ask.
