Help on Fastener ID'ing

Guys - I'm stuck trying to identify the screw used at the top of the grill - #610019 in the attached drawing. I think it is an oval head sheet metal screw with a black coating, similar to the one below. But, I can't find them in any of the catalogs so need some help from someone that has a truck that hasn't been molested - or at least not molested too much. Thanks in advance.

Would it matter what model? Because I believe mine are original, and I can get some pics up in the morning. Do you just conformation of the description, or where to order? Because I could certainly get some pics during the daylight.

The coating is probably black paint. The black star in front of number in pic: Not Serviced - Improvise.

If not listed in the text section, standard aka hardware numbers have to be looked up in this catalog, that also lists the additional suffix.

You omitted the N prefix shown in the pic.

(sigh) What's the world coming to? Mr. Clean hasn't dusted/mopped/vacuumed anything yet, but still has 5 days to do so!

Shagnasty - From what the catalog shows it doesn't natter what year as it shows as 80 on. And I'm particularly interested in the shape and diameter of the head. I think it is what is called "oval" meaning it has a tapered lower section and a rounded top section.

Bill - Yes, I omitted the N. Sorry if that bothered your sensibilities. Ford's 2004 Standard & Utility Parts Catalog shows it as a 19mm length, but I don't think the difference is significant. And the black paint fits with what I'm seeing - thanks. Unfortunately all I can find as replacements commercially are black oxide, which doesn't stand up to exterior use well. Is "Mr Clean" still there?

Alright, I'll get some to you in an hour or so, if you want. I'll measure them out for you to to confirm size.

Yeah, I'm still here, though Sunday. Not yet sure how much cleaning I'll do (things aren't as dirty as I had feared) the maids seem to be doing not such a bad job of keeping up.

Want to venture to Home Depot and/or Lowes this morning to get some stuff to 1) re-hang a gutter that's falling down, and 2) fix some decorative yard lighting. Went to Santa Barbara Mon & Tue with She, who must be obeyed we'll see where me & Bill can go as far as junk yards, hobby shops, museums, etc. this week.

Sounds like fun. You don't take SWMBO to the junk yards, museums, etc? Maybe, like Janey, she has "better things to do"? What could be better than a junk yard or car museum?

Heh... she works during the week, and the SB trip was because she was already going for a work-related conference. But we all went to Cal Poly last weekend (she graduated from there) as well as various other sightseeing trips.

"She" works 5 days a week, so will miss out on some of the activities.

"She" had a confab in Santa Barbara, why she went there. I couldn't go, because walking is difficult. Who the hell wants to sit around a hotel room doing nothing.

''She" has absolutely no interest in old rolling piles of misery, so I wouldn't bother taking "She" to a junkyard.

We have been to car museums, including the Speyer Transportation Museum in Festung Europa. Dunno any other car museums in today's world where one could see a ZIL, Wartburg or Wanderer.

The Lane Motor Museum in Nashville has an ABC and a ZIZ, an lots in between including many Tatras, BSA cars, BMW Isettas, and so on. They seem to specialize in European vehicles and especially unusual ones - including a double-headed 2CV with two steering wheels, two engines, two sets of headlights, etc. The direction you go depends on which door you get in.

Sorry about the wait, but here's a couple of pics.

A view of the Phillips head. the screw has been painted black.

Measurements: 23mm length by 9mm diameter

Another from above, all the screws matched, sorry about the low quality. My actual camera just died so these were by my phone.

Thanks, a bunch! But, that's not at all what I expected. I believe that is actually a 56904 which, as you can see in the drawing, is used to hold the grille to the grille supports - the two pieces of sheet metal screwed to the radiator support. There's another picture of it from Disco down below. It is described as a washer-head screw.

I'm pretty sure that is not N610019-S as Ford's Standard & Utility Parts Catalog shows it to be an oval head screw. The parts catalog shows that are three types of #8 or 4.2mm (same difference) sheet metal screws used to hold the "stuff" on the front of the truck:
  • Washer Head: (56904-S) The one you found is used in 4 places to hold the grille to the grille support, and one place to hold the grille to the to the hood latch support.
  • Pan Head: This is a small-headed screw that has no washer nor taper, and is used to hold the upper and lower trim on, and several other things.
  • Oval Head: (N610019-S) This one has a taper under the head that goes into a taper in the grille and holds the top of the grille to the filler panel in three places as well as the headlight bezel.
And I've found many of the trucks I've looked at to have those screws mixed up all over the place. Is it possible that's what's happened on yours? In any event, THANKS!!! I appreciate the help.

Most likely, and I didn't realize that. Like you said, the screws are pretty interchangeable, and I'd bet that is what happened. Someone must fooled around in there, and screwed them in the wrong holes. I'll cross check between my '86 and my '82 and look for some difference. If there is, I'll get back to you on it.

Thanks, a bunch. It may seem like a nit, but if we can nail down where the screws go now and document it, some day when someone is doing a 100-point resto he's gonna appreciate us.
