OK, here's what I've got:
91 Eddie Bauer Bronco, 351, E40D, BW1356
Transfer case is leaking oil at both the rear extension housing and the casing seam--not real bad, but I'd like to fix it before it reaches that point, along with inspecting the oil pump.
My big question is:
Can I split the case without removing the transfer case from the truck? do I have to be concerned with small parts falling out, or is it going to be fairly straightforward?
Just trying to avoid pulling it if I really dont have to--my back will thank me later
(sorry about crossposting in the forums, just trying to increase visibility)
i would pull it just to be safe, if i remember currectly there are no small parts that will just fall out, but you will have a hard time getting the case back together without removing it, besides, its not all that hard to remove it. well thats just my 2 cents
On my 90 F-150 with a manual shift 1356, I've resealed the seam twice without taking the case off the truck. The first was to replace the rear seal where the slip yoke is, and the second was to clean the outside with a pressure washer. If I remember correctly, the only hard part was putting the case back together and lining up the little oil pickup chute (once you get inside you'll see what I mean). But it shouldn't take very long at all. The seal between the tranny and x-fer case has never leaked, so i've never ventured there.
