I had to change the heads in my 85 F-150 with a 351W and the replacement heads (D80E) are a set of the older ones with the studs that the rocker arms attach to. I have never had to deal with these kind before and need some help on the correct way to reinstall them. Also, are these heads any better than the original ones (E5AE) that came on it? Thanks for any help you have to offer.
For Non-Adjustable Rockers:
(1) Torque the rocker nut to 10 to 15 ft lbs
(2) Position #1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke
(3) Using a blead down wrench (or other suitable means - strong thumbe if you have them) slowly apply pressure to the rocker to completely bottom the lifter.
Check for 0.75" to 0.175" clearance between the rocker and the valve on the following cylinders:
#1 intake & exhaust, #7 intake, #5 exhaust, #8 intake, & #4 exhaust
(4) Rotate the engine clockwise 180 degrees and check clearance on the following:
#5 intake, #2 exhaust, #4 intake, & #6 exhaust
(5) Rotate the engine 90 degrees clockwise and check the following:
#2 intake, #7 exhaust, #3 intake & exhaust, #6 intake, & #8 exhaust
If the clearance is out of tollerance, install longer or shorter push rods to get the right clearance.
