the auto trans is.....auto.it will downshift when it needs to.if you ever notice it try and cycle between od/3rd then hit the od cancel button otherwise let it do what it wants.

Mine isn't a powerstroke, but...

I was told that keeping the trans out of OD when towing kept the trans fluid moving through the cooler faster. I've actually noticed lower trans fluid temps when towing with OD off.

Generally, if the tranny is "hunting" between 3rd. and OD, you should turn it off. If it is doing fine in OD, leave it on...

you were told incorrectly Bob.when the E40D's converter locks up just after 3rd gear, the trans should run very cool with a oem cooler and aux cooler with no ill effects of od causing warmer trans fluid temps.
if you notice higher than 200F trans pan/test port temps while towing in OD,then you should suspect the aux cooler not being large enough for your loads.while in OD and towing, this means there is less load on the engine or it wouldn't have up shifted yet.since it did go into od,you have to be going faster.the faster speeds should mean lower trans temps due to more airflow through the coolers.

Only time I take my 95 powerstroke out of OD is before a steep hill to maintain speed as best as possible with a load. What is your rear end ratio?
