Steering box leaking
I just did a big road trip From Central Ontario down to Orlando Florida for March Break and had 7 people in the van plus all the crap that goes with them.
All was good till I found a puddle of steering fluid under the van coming from the steering box output arm. Not sure if I hit something or what caused it.
I am going to throw new seals in but need to know does my 97 E-150 have a axle rating above or below 4200 lbs. I am assuming under...
Has anyone else done this repair? I did it last on a 71 Pontiac, many years ago.
Cheers
Your E150 front axle should be under 4200#, the drivers door sticker will confirm that though.
I opted for the Ford reman'd unit, $258 plus $225 core.
Needless to say that core was returned ASAP! Apart from a Redhead Steering Gear unit locally I could only find "cheap" reman'd units, most by the Cardone A1 brand---not one I'd trust even though those are about $100 less.
More Information for EDELMANN 8771
I will order and wait till the weather breaks here, still below freezing for another week.
Apart from the extra labor and assuming no internal parts are as worn as the leaking seal this might be a great alternative with a cost savings advantage.
If you dig into this and care to document it with photos and text it might make a great addition the our knowledge base here.
Thanks for sharing!
