Def first fill

How many miles before I should top off the def tank? Someone said get the first tank from ford because they have a special fill can so I wont spill it all over. Can I just buy def from anywhere after that? I just turned 2200 miles

I use about 1gal/1000mi. The computer will tell you when the DEF tank drops below 1/2. I wait for that. I did buy a 5 gal jug of DEF from Ford to get the filler and it works fine. You don't have to get anything from Ford but I wanted the filler tube that comes with their jug. I expect it will wear out with a few uses since it doesn't feel too sturdy but it's fine for now. I've bought DEF from AutoZone for less than the dealer (go figure) and filled the tank at a truck stop from the bulk fill for even less. I'd say buy it wherever is convenient.

I use the 2.5 gallon jug (in a box) they sell at WalMart and most stations with diesel. It comes with a filler tube with a vent in it. Just remember the DEF goes in the tank with the green cap....wait, no the blue cap, THE BLUE CAP...<smacks forehead repeatedly> The blue cap darnit!

Does that can have the auto vent stop so I wont overfill and spill it all over?

No, they have the slow pour spout that only pours fast when the tank is full and it's time to get DEF all over you, your shoes and your truck . I spilled every time I filled mine. Don't miss it at all.

I have never bought any jugs of DEF.

I always buy my DEF from the pump at the truck stops, mostly at Loves, but Flying J and some others have it also.

It is about 1/3 the cost per gallon compared to what most places sell those jugs of DEF for.

One thing about buying from the pump, you need the magnetic release adapter for the pump nozzle. This opens the check valve in the nozzle so the DEF will flow. I got mine from one of the Loves truck stops that I frequent.

And when I'm working, I go through a tank of DEf in about 4500-4600 miles. Sure wish the DEF tank was bigger!

I bought the spout from ford. You can reuse it on fords product or the blue def at wally world. same size.

rinse with fresh water after use, reseal in the bag provided.

I got a little over 5K on a full tank. Mine was full when purchased. I made sure of it.
