Ford's "new" oil recommendations

Down here in sunny south florida it gets hot and stays hot. I switched everything over to Amsoil 10w40 with good purolator filters. It's a little more expensive, but I saw an engine torn down with over 300k on it and all I could say was WOW.

Ford's "new" oil recommendations

In my old truck I used 20W50 in hot weather. If I used less I had no oil pressure ( indicated ) in hot idle whilst off roading. THe truck had a 351M and this is typical for high milage engines. Last summer I drove it Seattle to Buffalo and back with the camper on the back with no pressure probs

Ford's "new" oil recommendations

This thread really proves what I tell my friends when we argue about oil.

Your vehicle is much more tolerant than you are.

People run thin, thick, etc.. It doesn't matter.. Just keep it clean and free of foreign fluids, and be amazed at the longevity.

My diesel bug requires CH rated synthetic diesel oil. I saw a guy posting about how he uses Pennzoil dinolube in it.

!!! Everyone jumped on the guy like he is nuts, and his engine will die instantly.

He then went on to mention how he's been doing it for 150k miles and changing it at 3k intervals.

I imagine it's worse in a way, than using synthetic like you're supposed to (espeically since diesels produce soot, and this car has a turbo)

BUT, it taught me that it is not as BAD as people think, to blatantly disregard OEM instructions.

Thus, I imagine 5w20 Motorcraft will not degrade your engine life SO much, that you can put a finger on it as the ONLY contributing cause to engine failure (and I'm guessing Ford's lawyers are banking on that as well)

This is my opinion only: I will continue to use 10w30 in my truck. Summer and winter.

Though, I MIGHT be persuaded now to use 5w20 in the winter here, knowing it won't hurt anything.

20W50 Is good in racing applications even in 351 motors.

I would personally never use an extremely thin oil. I will always use 10W30, or in the case of my car, 15W50 mobile one.

The thread has been re-opened. Please keep within the guidelines, if you need a refresher course, click the link in my signature. We can all act as adults can't we, let's just breathe, relax, and enjoy out time on FTE. If I (a 19 yr old) can do it....you guys can too. Thanks!

Ford's "new" oil recommendations

Interesting. If 5W20 works, wouldn't 5W30 work equally well? Especially in climates where the temps very seldom hit as low as 32 degrees. My 2000 Honda requires 5W30 and I run 10W30 in my '94 F150. I'd love to just buy one oil for both.......Van

Ford's "new" oil recommendations

Ford's reasoning, according to the TSB, is the 5W-20 they recommend will improve fuel mileage. Less friction maybe? Anyway, they are going to do anything they can to help improve the overall fleet mileage.

Ford's "new" oil recommendations

I run 20W50 in my F-150 in the Summer and drop to a 10W40 in the Winter...this is mainly due to my slight leak from my rear main. I do use Restore with each change now and have far less oil leakage.

It is not like it gets super cold in Houston but the slightly thinner oil is better for start ups when the temps are cooler.

Heck my WRX is made for 5W30 and that is what I still run in it, and plan to until it explodes.

My input...

Ford's "new" oil recommendations

Reposted

I've never seen a factory sticker specifying oil weight, but the owner's manual (p. 243 in the '92 Bronco manual) shows a small portion of the same diagram as the Haynes manual in Ch. 1, which shows that oil viscosity isn't specific to an engine size or manufacturer, but to climate (temperature). In Detroit (where they write the owner's manual), the climate dictates lower weights to keep the oil flowing at the low temperatures they get. In the South, the temperature is MUCH higher year-round, so we need heavier oil to maintain the film between the bearings. If you consult the chart, you'll see that for temperatures constantly above 20°F, 20W50 is the correct weight. During the winter, if lower temps are expected, 10W30 or 10W40 is correct - you don't have to stay with one weight year-round.

NOTE: PLEASE REFER TO THE VEHICLE APPLICATION LIST LATER IN THIS TSB FOR A COMPLETE LIST OF VEHICLES AFFECTED BY THIS TSB.

ISSUE:
Ford Motor Company now recommends SAE 5W-20 viscosity grade for servicing most gasoline and flexible fueled vehicles.

ACTION:
All 2001 and 2002 vehicles where SAE 5W-20 is specified should be serviced at the recommended oil change intervals using SAE 5W-20. This oil is an improved formulation to improve fuel economy. Testing has validated this viscosity grade can be used in many previous model year vehicles. It is recommended ALL vehicles on the following Vehicle Application Listing be service with SAE 5W-20.

All 2001-2002 vehicles other than those listed in the "Exception 2001 Vehicles" or "Exception 2002 Vehicles" chart are being filled with SAE 5W-20 motor oil at the factory and should also be serviced with SAE 5W-20 oil.

Man, the last time someone posted in this thread was 14 years ago, and I was only 11 years old

But to answer your question everyone I know has never used anything but 10w-30 in every 99 and older vehicle they have owned.

I thought it would be funny to bring it back from the dead because I doubt many people actually followed the official TSB, but if somebody did, I would legitimately be interested in their experience.
