I tried using polishes and compounds to remove the scratches and imperfections in my clear coat and was wondering if I could wet sand my clear coat and polish back out to a shine doing this all by hand ????? Thanks any help would be great
In my experience, factory clear coats are rock hard and if sanded it's almost impossible to polish out all of the sand scratches. If it has been repainted at some point it is possible.
OEM clear is very thin and while you can technically use 3000 grit (with a drop of liquid soap & water) sand and then polish them out, you may very well be shortening the "life" of the paint because of the reduced clear mil thickness. May I suggest.....
BAF/Pro Car Care Beauty Products P21 Swirl Eliminator & Polish- I typically do not like "combination" type products but P21 is very, very impressive & effective from end result, ease of use & overall effectiveness or 3M Finesse II,
if this doesn't work, pickup a jar of duplicolor (this will be the only time I will recommend this line) or oem clear touch up paint (liquid). The touch-up paint is lacquer-based (typically) and using the brush, apply a single coat thin coat over the scratch, let sit for at least 24 hours to ensure curing & bonding, then using 2500 or 3000 grit, wet sand until flush & polish. I would suggest additing a drop of dish soap (liquid) to the water...it will help reduce depth of scratch by providing lubrication and prior to wet-sanding, clean the area with denatured alcohol (its oil free) to ensure any wax/oil/grease residue is gone.
