Does any know if the 89 E40D with the OD button on the dash is the same transmission as the OBS trans, with the OD button on the shift lever. There is a guy on CL selling the 89 trans for a 4x4 diesel cheap. I wouldn't mind having it as a spare if it is the same as my 94.
it is the same trans.she'll bolt right up like any other idi e40d.however 1989 was the introductory year of the E40D.overall you want to skip this particular year as many internal issues were resolved in 90-94 trans (better still again in 95-97.just an s-pack and converter swap should be all it takes to make work behind the idi.better still again perhaps would be the 99-03 make the same two changes plus front pump and gear shift lever swap to older e4's and it too should work.ford renamed it 4r100 at this point.) a few odd ball differences in '89 making it like the redheaded step child of E40D's lol........but if it works and is cheap enough.....but if i irrc you don't even want to use the '89 case for a reman if avoidable.
Hmm. Bummer. I was thinking that it would be nice to have if my 94 ever had trans problems. I could put that one in while I had the current trans rebuilt. He wants 150 for it and says it was working when the engine was pulled. Now, the 93 2wd and the 94 4wd trans are not interchangeable, right?
thats the nice thing of having 2 trucks though.you could use the other while one is down.a reman at a shop usually only takes a week all installed.even if the 4wd truck lost it's trans in the winter, you wouldn't be down for long if you had a shop do it.your talking 2500-4k though for this.so for a used $150 trans id just run 'er for all she's worth first lol.hard to beat the $approx the cost of fluid and filter.so you'd need to plan to gamble $300 on it.i wouldn't go through the issue of installing a temp trans for a week or two though if i had another truck to run.
2wd/4wd versions interchange; in short no.
options:
the 2wd trans would go into the 4wd truck if you wanted to ditch the t-case and have a 2wd truck with useless front axle.
the 4wd trans would go into the 2wd truck if you wanted to install a t-case and have a set of low range gears but no front axle of course so no 4wd.(each with appropriate drive shaft alternations.)
the trans internals could be swapped into either case then bolted into the truck.i suppose this might save a grand in parts? might cost more in labor to pull the old parts from the one though.doubtful a worthwhile endeavor.
