I have a 97 F150 4x4 Lariat with a 4.6 and H9 axle (3.55). I recently purchased a 27ft. travel trailer that weighs 4700lbs dry. I pulled the trailer ok but the truck was working pretty hard. Any tips to increase HP would be greatly appreciated. Just want to do a little camping with the family and don't want to worry about impeding traffic out on the highways. I can pull at 60 MPH at 3000 RPM roughly and would like to have a little more power so the truck doesn't have to work quite as hard. I have a K&N Filter Charger on it now. Any help out there??
Just for anyone's info, the truck also has the trailer tow package on it as well as P285 16" radials. Any help or information will be appreciated. Thanks.
I'm using the same truck (not sure about 3.55) with a 24' 6300# TT at 65-70mph @ 2500.
Explain, if you don't mind, what the truck/camper hook up looks like.
Is camper level nose to tail when hitched?
Are you using a weight distribution system?
If yes, how much weight are you putting down on *** end of truck before attaching bars.
I just want to compare it against my way of setting it up.
If your running 285/16 tires they will reduce your towing capability, as they are larger than stock which increases your final drive ratio...regear to 3.73 or even 4.10
Had the same problem with my 01' supercrew 4x2,had a 4.6L W/ 3.55 GR 285/16 tires. Have tried K&N filter, cat back Flowmaster this helped a little but not enough.Have to remember if you are going to give you truck more air W/ K&N you need to let it exit fast too. I have a 26' TT and it weighs 4800lbs dry also, but we all know that we like to load them up with all those goodies for the trip.So what I did I traded it in for an 03' supercrew 5.4L tow pkg.ect... Don't have problem any more. With my 03' supercrew still have K&N filter and went cat back after Y 3" all the way back W/ 2 chamber Flowmaster. I agree w/ the boys re-gear if you can or bigger engine!
K&N filters let in a bunch of air, but they also let in a bunch of dirt. You will notice that your throttle body will be dirty as hell. If you decide to use one of these, make sure to clean and oil it often.
Most of that stuff (exhaust and k&n) are just wastes of money....just regear.
There is a right way to oil a K&N and wrong way if you do it right you won't have a problem. I've been been using K&N filters on all my off-road race cars for a long time, I have had some dirt build up them but that is in extreme conditions, but for the app. for this guys thread, it should benifit him.Little do you know that the dirty it is the better it works! Ford "from the factory" will install K&N filters (color blue) on there vehicles and put htem on dealers lots to sell. Ford WILL NOT use something in there vehicles that will screw them up. Dealers also step up there trucks exhaust systems for there 4x4s,it's called a 4x4 package and its' factoy waranted. Best of luck to u Hooter 1, everyone has their own opinion on things.
