I pulled a sliding glass rear window out of a 77 f-250, I already took out my old rear window (shattered it unfortunately ) and i have a new rear window seal coming in today
any ideas/tips on putting the other window back in w/o shattering another window?
take your time, It helps if you have someone help you to hold the window from the outside. Set the glass in the rubber gasket and set it on the bottom lip of the cab, making sure you have it centered, start working the corners of the gasket over the lip(do one lower coner then the other before moving up the sides). WD-40 may help if the gasket is real stiff and use a wooden paint stirrer or a plastic putty blade to flip the gasket. I have found you do more damage with a screwdriver than you would ever think! The main thing is TAKE YOUR TIME. fairly easy job, let us know how it turns out.
I called one of my mechanic buddies and he suggested using a rope. It worked very very well. Took about 10 minutes and it looks clean.
For future info insert a rope or something of the sort (i used an extension cord) into the lip of the gasket that goes over the lip of the cab. set the window in place where it should go and have someone push a pretty good bit on the window/gasket to get it as flush as possible, then fromt he inside pull out the rope and the gasket should seat itself....make sure you push the window in to help finish seating it.
weedeater line works well to. I have done so many I just sit the window in and use a stirrer to zip the gasket over the lip. Glad to hear it worked out for you
Don't use WD-40 on rubber because it will dissolve it eventually. It acts like a solvent and breaks down anything made out of petroleum including rubber.
