1989 ford f250 mutliple problems
#1. Rear tank leaks out when filled, also both tanks are very hard to fill.
#2. Previous owner swapped in a 351 and 5 speed. Gearing is way off
as I use 2nd gear as "1st gear."
#3. I have a misfire around 2k. I believe its the distibutor
Okay so I've heard that there are issues with the selector where one tank will fill up the other and vis versa. When I try to fill up the rear tank it just leaks out of the rearmost part of the tank. I cant see any visible holes or anything. Is this a common problem? Im tempted to just pull the bed and have a good look at it. Although the truck is very rusty and not sure if it will be easy.
As I noted before the previous owner swapped in a 351 and a zf5. I dont know what originally came in it. But on my steering wheel I have cruise control buttons which makes me think it was an automatic. Did this come standard? I have to use 2nd gear as "1st" as my 1st gear is damn near worthless. I'm using overdrive at 40mph... not good. I'm guessing I have 4.56 gears. Anyone have any suggestions?
Lastly I've got a misfire at a constant 2k, has a hard time staying at idle as it jumps up and down and will die a couple times when first started unless I help it stay alive. When warmed up and revved past 2k it goes away and runs fine past that. It looks like the last owner tried to fix this as the idle air control has been replaced, and throttle body cleaned out. I tried to retime it but got very odd timing flashes. A friend tried to help me out and said immediately that my distributor was bad. Anyone run into this?
Thanks for the help!
post your vin, and we can determine what engine/trans combo the truck was built with
cruise control was an option on these trucks, you could get it with both the auto and manual trans.
first gear in these trucks is very low, i only used first in my 88 when i had a heavy load or was starting on a hill.
the rear tank is most likely leaking because it is rotted out.
and slow filling is probably a clogged/plugged tank vent.
