Warranty Question

Well, I think I already have the problem figured out and apparently there was once upon a time ago a recall on this particular part (fuel tank selector valve). I've never dealt with a recall before so I have no clue how it works. My truck is an 88 F-150. I am the 3rd or 4th owner. Do you have to be the first owner on a recall? Or does the work have to be done a certain amount of time after the recall is issued? I guess I'm curious if there's any chance I can get this fixed or if I'll just have to fork out the $80 and do it myself. Also, is this a Ford only part? Or can I get it at a local parts store? Thanks!

The recall was only good for like 10 years on the tank selector valve. But I have head rumor of shops doing it after that. Just drop by the dealership and they sill look up on the computer any active recalls for your vehicle by vin#. Then you can try to sweet talk them into doing the Tank Valve.

If not, just buy the part

Jim,

Thanks for your reply. Have you replaced this valve or had it done? I'm actually kind of curious how much of a pain this is to fix as it really isn't that big of a problem...just annoying. I actually figured this out over a year ago (so obviously its not even bugging me that much) when I had two full tanks and was trying to use the rear tank first. As I was using the rear tank, it was over-filling the front tank. So I just use the front tank first then switch. No biggie. Well, this week I decided to see how far past "E" I can go on the front tank and it just keeps going and going (its drawing off the rear tank once the front is empty). So as long as I pay attention to how much fuel I really have (which I definetly do!) then it really isn't a big deal.

The other thing I found this morning is a website for Technical Service Bulletins and reading through all the problems they've found on this model makes me want to cry. I've had problems before with one they listed: Fuel Gauge - Erractic Needle Movement. Which is another really irritating problem though not really a big deal. I would like to fix this stuff but don't really want to spend big bucks on it or waste too many good cuss words..

I did mine myself when I had the bed off. It was easy that way, but I was in the middle of some repairs anyway......

I have heard that you need to drop the tanks otherwise....but that is not that difficult either. Your call as to what you think would be simpler/easier.

The recalls are for some specified time/mileage as far as I know - unless they are safety recalls, then they are supposed to be unlimited. Don't quote me on that though....And if you are not the first owner, some of them may have been done.
