I have a '77 351m w C6, 4x4, 3.50 gears, 31" rubber, 105K miles, Edelbrock Performer intake and 600 carb, Crane Fireball hydr cam set straight up, and long ago I added a quick advance spring kit to distributor.
I set timing by unplugging vacuum advance and plugging it, then speed engine up until distributor mechanical advance is all in, set timing at 34-35 degrees BTC, then reattach vacuum line to vacuum advance mechanism. These motors seem to like 34-35 degrees under full load and can tolerate more at p[art throttle cruise so my way works very well on my '77.
I have marked my damper up to 40 degrees BTC.
Currently my distributor vacuum comes off ported vacuum fitting on carb, but in years past I have used manifold vacuum which is same above idle .... but it allowed a lower setting of the idle stop screw.
