351 Carb or Timing Problems?

I had a few questions for you guys. I have a 1979 F150 FT 4x4 351M/C6. Currently has the stock 2bbl carb. Ever since I got it, there has been a hesitation in the throttle and it would surge forward and stop lights. Some days it would even stall out. I did a basic tune up (quality plus, wires, cap, rotor, etc..), it helped some. I installed a new ignition module (on back plastic part looked like to be bubbles forming from heat). There are no vaccum leaks, checked every single hose. Still hesitation, deadspot, surge etc..

As for the hesitation, you push the accelerator and it is nothing but a dead spot, then at half throttle it revs right up and goes. While sitting and idling it surged etc. Sounded as it was idling to high, so I set the idle down some, which helped some. What is causing this dead spot? The other thing is, I figured id play with the timing some. I take the bolt that holds the dist in place, and I cannot even budge the dist to advance or retard timing, why is this? Do I need to get my hands on a new carb? Thanks in advance!

the dead spot could be a tired accelerator pump, a carb kit will cure that if it's the problem. i try to avoid "playing with the timing", but i do enjoy "setting the timing". this requires a timing light and a golf tee to plug the vacuum hose at the distributor. have you checked for a vacuum leak? if you were to "set" the timing and possibly find a vacuum leak, who knows how good it might run? your distributor must be stuck if it doesn't move when the clamp bolt is loose. try tapping lightly with a hammer or even a piece of 2x4 to loosen it. get some penetrant oil around the base and hope it seeps in while you tap. i've heard of every method including wrapping a chain around it and lifting it with the engine hoist whilst beating it, then driving the busted off stump out of the block from underneath after removing the oil pan and pump. some try to turn it with a pipe wrench, channel locks, vise grips, oil filter wrenches....caution and persistance usual gets it out. i smeared mine with anti-sieze the last time i set in(hint hint). even if you don't get the dizzy loose right away you can find out if the timing needs to be adjusted, maybe it's ok where it is?
