which MERCON V?
The onlys one i can find locally is Castrol Transmax, and Motorcraft from the dealership. It even appears that Mobil 1 ATF is no longer carrying the FORD certification.
amongst the many house brands that are not certified, i can also get Mobil 1, Amsoil, valvoline and probably a few other name brands -- but none of them are being certified by FORD -- they all just say "recommended by (us) for use in vehicles requiring MERCON or MERCON V (and usually a bunch of others)"
what's a guy to do?
is there a list of fluids somewhere that ARE certified?
i'd really like a synthetic, can i trust mobil 1 or amsoil? are their any others? Redline perhaps? even though they aren't certified?
here are the Part #s;
XT-5-QM - 1 quart bottle (sold individually)
XT-5-QMC - 1 quart bottle (sold in Case only - 12 qts to a case)
XT-5-5QM - 5 quart jug
XT-5-GM - Gallon jug
It's going in tomorrow and its getting a flush with a multi vehicle synthetic that my mechanic has been using for years.
used the same stuff in my explorer at about 100k, and at it still worked like new at 175k when i got rid of it.
So i guess i'm not that concerned about it.
i could have gotten Amsoil for about $8.50/qt by buying 5 gallons, or i could have gotten mobil 1 for about $8.80/qt. the stuff he uses at the shop works out to about 6.00 per quart.
figgure if i'm not going to be able to buy a "certified by ford" synthetic, i might as well save $2.00 per quart, and use the stuff he trusts and has worked well for me in the past.
i think you can use the name Mercon and Mercon V, so long as you use the (R) denoting that it is a registered trade mark.
and you can say "suitable for use in vehicles requiring Mercon V" if you think it is. but you cannot say "certified for use in vehicles requiring Mercon V" unless you had it tested and certified by Ford.
very hard to find fluids that are ford certified. and impossible to find a synthetic that is ford certified. or if there is, i couldn't find one. however, it is easy to find one that says Mercon V compatible. very confusing for the consumer.
digging a little deeper, Super Tech Mercon V lists Warren Distribution Inc. as the supplier. whether that is good or bad, i have no idea.
