Here's the latest 400 for a customer in New York. Pro-Comp heads, Hyd roller Thumpr camshaft. Dressed with the CVF Racing bracket and pulleys and Tuff Stuff accessories. Engine knocked down about 475 HP and 511 TQ.
The heads are not bad.
I wanted to give them a try since I had heard from a few other professionals
that they thought they were better now.
They had some bad issues years ago.
But I wouldn't use them again.
Here's why.
Trick Flow 195 CNC heads would sell for about $1899 a pair complete.
Pro-Comp sells about $1350, but the valves are sunk in the chamber so bad that you have to spend time
unshrouding the valves. Well then you can buy the CNC version for roughly $250 a pair more, bringing you to $1600
So you do save about $300 a pair.
But then you'll find out that you now have to clearance the push rods to the intake runner, becasue
we had issues there also.
Then last but not least, you will be restricted to using their version of a 3V single plane intake manifold.
So to answer your question, yes the heads worked and they worked OK.
If you were buying the heads and doing the grinding work your self, you can save money if you want
to use their intake manifold.
If you buy them complete and have a shop supply them complete and properly prepared, they will probably cost more.
Course some shops may slap them together and call them yours!
Now for the 400 we built, we had Price make us a special adapter (since we need one anyway) but made it in such a way that
we were able to use an Edelbrock Air gap intake manifold.
I am glad we were able to spend some time with these heads, we handled about 4 pairs in the past 1/2 year.
But me myself will use the Trick Flow heads for the money, and the CHI 3V when we really need them.
. I assume those ProComp heads are imported from China, so if someone wants to keep a job in the USA, should use USA made heads even if cost a few bucks more... at least the imported heads are helping keep the price of many USA heads a bit more sensible...
. Like the unions say: Out of a job yet? Keep buying imported!
