tranny compatability

First...I have an 81 F150 Custom 4 x 4 w/ I6 300 and what I believe is the Ford 3-speed...but not absolutely sure.

It's 3 speed on the floor w/ an OD but does have "Ford" & the 'C' stamp on it.

I'm a little confused cause I thought these trannies were normally on the column.

Anyway...the tranny seized up on me & I need to replace.

I was wondering if I could replace w/ a Warner T18 or T19 or NP435 w/o any adapters/modifications?

I've been restoring the truck for a few years now, have a 6" suspension lift, 35" tires & have upgraded the engine w/ some performance parts.

Thanks
John

Three speeds with OD were on the column, with a separate shifter for the OD.

What you have is a 4 speed OD trans, where 4th is OD.

NP435 or T18 might be a direct bolt in.

There were a couple of recent posts on this. I will try to find them and link to them, as they will give you details on the swap.

The Ford versioned NP/T trans will definitely bolt up to your bell. Cross member and length are the questions.

The belhousing bolt pattern of this motor never changed and it shares that with the 302 and 351w so you could also bolt up a 4wd version of the M5 or ZF 5 speeds from a later truck.

Same deal as you:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...e-b-trans.html

I thought I could find a couple others where they swapped the OD to a T18/NP, but I give up for now.

As for the ZF or Mazda 5 speeds, they can be swapped in. However, they are integral bell transmissions (which yours is not) and they use hydraulic clutches. If you think a 5er would be more better, we can find some threads on that swap.

You need to find a trans from a 4x4 in any case though.
