I have a 97 4x4 i know it has 3.55 limited slip, im hell bent on improving the performance of my truck, i would like to get a programmer from Jet to help tweak the tranny so it'll pull better from 1-2 and 2-3 etc. but could i get 3.73 gears to better the acceleration and then get a programmer or skip out on the programmer all together. If i do upgrade the gear ratio how much could it cost for a ballpark estimate? thanks!
Pat, what is your intentions for the your truck??
Just a DD....no trailer or offroading...then the 3:73 will offer a pretty good comperomise.
Now if you intend to pull occasional camper or any kind of cargo trailer or and the occasional offroad/mud adventure , or even bigger tires?...you might want to consider jumping to 4:10, your transmission will be a lot happier for it.
Now if you are into a heavy regiment of mud bogging or sand runs or off roading , or truck pulls...then you may want to get thinking of something higher numerically , say 4:56 or 4:88 or better if you dedicating this truck to such things .
No matter what gears you intend...might figure somewhere around $1500 ball park on cost...some less if you have the skills to do it yourself.
you also will probably want to reconsider the programmer, & jump to a full tunner....one that can expand and adjust with your performance inprovements .
