4r100 temp question

Hi all.
Today I installed a BTS VB and did a transmission flush. All went well with not the slightest hiccup. MY question is should the normal operating temp go up after VB and transgo plate is installed?

I have a temp gauge and the torque app and monitor these things obsessively. The temp would never really go above 150 before and afterwards the trans temp is staying at 170-175. I know this is not to hot but to me it was just not a normal reading.

Also while I am asking questions : What exactly was different about the VB I got from BTS? I spent over half an hour with a magnifing glass trying to see a difference but I could not see a thing.

TIA for any input

Weird that the temps increased... I would expect no change at all, but if anything temps would decrease a few degrees as the clutches should engage quicker. I would definitely give it a few more drives before you draw any conclusions. You used the same fluid as what was in there?

There will be no external/visible differences in the VB - the difference is in the springs/valves.

I see

The fluid that was in the tranny when it came out looked like my last oil change. I have put 32,000 miles on it and it was "suposedly' changed/serviced right before i got the truck. The fluid was definitely not burned or smelled bad just real dirty. Also nothing in the pan except the sludge on the magnet. The only thing that was askew was the internal screen was sitting half sideways in the VB when it came out so that threw me off a bit but nothing else weird.

As for the fluid I used valvoline mercon V.

I did notice that the shifts are so much softer now and most of them you don't even know that it even happened. Very nice. And honestly going by the 100 above ambient air temp I would say it was just a tad bit above that standard as our high here today was 60-65..
Thanks for your input

My comment is only having to do with the general operation of your trans cooling system. I know nothing about the different VB's. Judging by your previous temp of 150* I'm guessing your cooler bypass line was not stuck open before the fluid flush. I've read the fresh detergants works pretty good at loosening up a lot of the clutch material buit up in the transmission. And judging by the dirty fluid it sounds like there was quite a bit just like mine was What I am getting at is all the sludgy clutch material that was free'd up may have found a home in one of your coolers. That would cause enough back pressure to partially lift the bypass check ball off it's seat and allow some of the hot fluid to feed back into your transmission. Long shot, but who knows. If you have an infa-red temperature gun, compare the temeprature of the bypass line to the cooler supply/return lines. This is how I found out I had a partially pinched cooler supply line, I replaced the line and my temp came down. Just my $.02 good luck

Has the ambient air temp gone up in your area? That's my first thought.

I also noticed a difference after my trans went out and I had it rebuilt. The only few major differences I did was a transgo and amsoil. I don't know what was in it for fluid before. The amsoil is out of it and valvoline is in it since I dropped the trans to replace a shot tripple disc billet converter that I broke

EDIT: I still have warmer temps then I did before the trans went out with both kinds of fluids. Maybe Mark will chime in and give us his valued opinion on the situation.

I live in stupid SoCal where the only GOOD thing is the temperature never changes really Once I downloaded Torque I monitored trans temp. My temps were constantly at 190-200* while driving unloaded. My situation is far different from yours though. I bought my truck 2 yrs back off someone who didn't maintain it well. Little by little I would fix one issue and another would immediately show it's ugly mug, oh well. You can say I've had a crach course in just about EVERY operating system on a 7.3 PSD HAHA.

When you did the flush, did you notice ANY fluid coming out of your bypass line? Did you happen to check fluid flow rate from the coolers during the flush?

Sounds like a very similar situation that I've been going through with my truck for the last 4 years. Everything the previous owner did I had to redo the right way. I bought the 7.3 knowing it was a reliable engine and so far it has proved to be because I haven't had to mess with the engine much at all just everything else beside, around, under, behind and on top of it....

No I didn't notice anything out of the normal when I flush it either time. Of course I checked the fluid flow rate........ No I'm lying.... I didnt

Sounds like you and I bought from the same guy, we should drown our sorrows
I really don't think you had a cooler bypass line issue BEFORE you flushed the fluid, or for that matter any reason to check for proper fluid return volume from the coolers. I'm just pointing out a simple temperature check for process of elimination purposes. I'm sure someone will chime in soon with a more knowledgeable answer. Good luck bud!
