Rear is out of a '85 F-250/6.9. I bought the truck from original owner and it was still factory and I believe 4.10 4 speed. I would like to try using this rear in my '89 which lost an axle and bent the tube. I ran an earlier thread on that.
The '89 tag is 4.10 but the '85 tag is unreadable, I'm pretty sure it's 4.10 but running the Vin code on this site has not helped, probably because between the links and this iPad i'm pretty challenged.
Truck was totaled 8 year ago and we stripped it ( unfortunately this means my 6.9 has been sitting 8 years) so all I have is the title with Vin.# Can someone help? I guess i will pull the cover and do an insp. and try to count teeth.
Easiest way is to pull the cover, they're just been way too many changes to these trucks over the years so who knows what is inside..
Besides you wanted to do a diff service anyway, right? :-)
One other thing, the distance between backing plate is 3/4" shorter than '89 with the center of the spring mounting plate being 1/4" closer to the backing plate each side. That accounts for 1/2" of the discrepancy. I wonder if that will make a difference? Providing I get her bolted in and tightened up. Will that be a bind?
You can just count how many revolutions of the yoke are required for one full wheel revolution. It's pretty easy to tell four revolutions from 3.5, with 4.10 and 3.55 being the stock choices. I would not worry about the distances between the backing plates. 80-97 had the same frame dimensions, and the spring perches will be correct. It is a direct bolt in
It has 46 teeth on ring vs 13 on pinion. My limited math skills tell me this is a 3.5 I'm working with. Now I'm really in a quandary. I was trying to save $$$ and I had this sitting there. Now I either have to go look for another,, and saw them at $350, or, install this one and change out the front-housing and all-to the match from the '85. Another option is to find another truck to cannibalize. ????
'88 truck on craigslist - $900.-not sure the ratio yet
rear from "parting out truck-$350.-will have to hunt for ratio
Install what I have several, plus $$$$ -known ratio known costs
in new parts, like brake shoes,
wheel cyl. lines, etc. that all the others will probably need.
This truck hauls trailers and in winter "should be" hauling sand/salt in 1-1/2 yd spreader. I'm thinking that 4.10 is where I should stay?
There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know. Donald Rumsfeld
may have the solution, I forgot about the '93 2 wheel drive parts truck. The rear is 4.1 and has a a torsion bar or sway bar. I'm thinking it's the way to go and add the sway bar to my '96 PSD. No one, absolutely no one would ever know if the '89 rode better with a sway bar. Any problems you guys see?
